Refrigerating Spawn
    #8020937 - 02/14/08 02:18 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

So it was suggested to me in another thread that I could refrigerate my extra spawn until I was able to use them. I need to hear more on this before i stuff my hard work in to a refrigerator. Like how long will it survive. Does it stall growth. Also can I do this to my Lc because i have a ass load of that too. thanx in advance.

What exactly is the spawn your trying to save? If your talking about colonized grains, you can put them in the fridge to conserve them till your ready. I actually have 10 pint jars finished that weren't ready for use and I just took them out of the incubator and stored in a dark place at room temp for almost 2 weeks and there were fine. I'm sure this applies to substrate material like coco.

Maybe an expert can jump in and correct me if I'm wrong

Yea it's colonized rye berries. In quart jars and half gallon jars. Also what about the lc how long will it last, also the rye how long will they survive.

I always store lc in the fridge, been in for 6 months and no problems.
I have stored spawn in clean fridge for 6 weeks with no problems.

It always works fine for me.

at least 6 months. Probably years.
I had a 1/2 trash bag full of spawn in the fridge for 6+ years until i could build my outdoor beds

But keep in mind that the fridge hoard a lot of these 'evil' contaminants.
Keep in mind - do not panic

I claim always a quart of our fridge with petri dishes, and the only small problem is my wife. (not realy)

you are supposed to throw out the cheese before its gets moldy.
Fridges are not sterile but you should not be storing shit in the fridge that needs a sterile environment.

if you put a fully colonized jar in the fridge and it gets contaminated you are damn lucky it didn't contaminate during colonization.

fridges are not sterile, you are correct. As long as you prepared and/or constructed your jars correctly, the only difference a fridge will make is delay growth.

sterile environment or no, a properly constructed and fully colonized jar shouldn't be a problem. If it is, someone needs to backtrack.

Yea, only the outside should be 'infected'. but thats definitely.
But whats the longest time in the fridge for viable spawn one ever had ?
maybe a search ... tired now

really tired Tahoe had answered the question boa

fridges are dirty as fuck actually. They are just cold so it prevents the spores from germinating and growing rapidly.

You guys ever lose power for a few days and your fridge hits room temp for 1-3 days.
Fuck that sticks!!
