I have read about this before but cant seem to find the tek where its explained and I have been searching for an hour but my question is....Is it better to sterilize or pasturize say a 50/50 casing mix of peat, verm and lime? and if so, whats the best method of doing it? I did read somewhere that you can use a microwave but im going to be using jars to cleanse with so any suggestions? Sorry, i know this has been brough up a million times.

always pastureize casing never sterilize. sterilizing kills good bacteria. I usually go with 50/50 peatverm with calicium carbonte for buffer that you can find at any pet store for reptile cages. I pasturize using a microwave 4 min. then shake or stir it up with clean spoon i use alcohol to clean it then let it dry. i then put it in again for another 4 min. then done. whatch how much lime you put in it cam burn the myc. search the post for casing and microwave teks they are there thats where i found this one Happy farming.

To speak from my personal experience, I only use short amounts of time to nuke my casing layers and NEVER had any issues with contams. A microwave CAN kill actually every single mold spore or bacteria in your layer, though WE can't, cause you'd need to use a mechanic that keeps your tray rotating in three dimensional manner. Additionally you'd need a 100 % sterile environment, which we also don't have. The very moment your casing gets in contact with air, it gets in contact with mold spores and bacteria. The sense of sterilizing is to reduce the bacterial and mold spore content in it, not to get rid of it completely, cause can't be achieved anyway.
Anyway, me don't having any trouble using two minutes of nuking doesn't mean, that this is the way to go! PC sterilization is a reputable way to do it, so you might want to stick with this. Do some more reading on the teks and decide for yourself what you'd like to do. Since a jar of myc isn't a big loss, I'd suggest to try both ways simultaneously to see what path you want to go.
