Who holds the power in this day and age?
    #8019258 - 02/13/08 07:55 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

American sociologists have developed two competing perspectives in an attempt to answer a simple question: Who governs? Some (pluralist and functionalist perspectives) answer "the many." Others (conflict perspectives) answer, "the few."

Describe both these perspectives and how they might be applied to study a political process (e.g. an election, lobbying etc...) or an political institution (e.g. the Presidency, the Judiciary etc...) in the United States. In your opinion, which is the more compelling perspective?

This was a question on my Political Sociology exam I had today.
I basically said, in a nutshell, that pluralists feel that the majority rules because there are more than one political party in the United States. As well, we have the right to assemble and gain and extend power by meeting and forming centers of action.

Conflict theorists, on the other hand, feel that we have no say in the government, and that there is a small minority that holds power.
I feel this is the more compelling perspective because in our current election, Ron Paul is a seriously viable candidate, but does not stand a chance. We are given 2 choices pretty much.

Just wanted to see how yall felt about this question.

I can't tell if you all answered humorously because you were actually trying to be funny, or because you just didn't understand the question. Scary.

Think tanks, foundations, agencies, and mega corporations control most of the world. In the US the Council on foreign relations sets the policy, for the common wealth its the Royal Institute for International affairs. The Club of Rome is a think tank which also holds a lot of power. There is also the Knights of Malta, the Jesuits, all the Royal Families of Europe, the Pope, Emperor of Japan, the top caste families of India. And then all the merchants who control the flow of wealth (the bankers). And those are only the ones we know about.

Democracy is for voting the last douche bag out, not for voting the best canidate in.
