If the filter material is ripped send it back. If it is the metal you'll probably be ok.Mine has a few kinks and I do just fine.

there is a small tear in the filter material and I should be getting a replacement filter soon. I was thinking this filter might not totally go to waste.
my thought was that I might be able to cover the tear with hot glue or something of the sort. any one have experience with this kind of situation?

if you can seal the tear then it should be fine. Those filters are for removing a shit load of bad spores from the air. I am sure that when its used in a semi clean room that the chance of a stray passing through the filter will not be a problem

I know of more than one case in which pinholes and minute tears in HEPAs have been repaired using silicone or glue and still out at 0 particles at 0.5um size. You'll lose the air flow from that small area, but it's of no real consequence. Any repairs you might try to do in which this repair method would could problems with sterility are already to large to fix in this way.

I've used hot glue and rubber cement to repair HEPA filters before. Rubber cement tends to get drawn into the filter and won't form a good layer or any thickness because it just flows away. Hot glue works well.

how much would a 12x12 hepa filter be worth?

Repairing it will screw up the laminar flow. It will work fine as a general filter, but I wouldn't use a glued filter for sterile work or as a flowhood. RR
