coir substrate dunking question
    #8019056 - 02/13/08 07:23 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

ok.. I always put my substrate in an aluminum lined container to avoid sidepinning... I always case with 100% vermiculite..

If I were to dunk these, from what I read, I would fill up the tray they are in until it starts to float.. how is it going to absorb water if its covered with aluminum foil?

you guys think I could just dunk in a big steamer pot? like, stack all the trays in there, and fill up with water and let them sit there for 8 hours or so? and should I change the casing? I just have never needed to dunk a substrate, but I have been reading about coir being a one flush substrate, and I wanna get more than one substrate...

Um, to the best of my knowledge, dunking is more of a cake deal, not so much a case substrate thing. You could fill it with water inside the tin foil tho, then put a strainer over the top to drain it.

Your best bet is to use the search feature RR is a great source of information he has posted on pretty much everything so just put his name in and what your looking for your thread title and his name gave me this

It would be best to dunk the whole substrate instead. The casing is only the top layer.

Just set it under a faucet and let the tin pan fill up with water so the water gently runs over the edges. Put a rock or jar full of water on top of the substrate to keep it from floating. Let the water run for a few hours, then shut it off and drain the excess water by tipping the pan over.
