bags vs. jars
    #8018969 - 02/13/08 07:06 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

What is the main difference between rye bags (such as the rye-z-morph back from mycofactory) and rye jars if spawning to bulk substrate?

Many shroomery sponsers offer pre-sterilized rye grain bags at a much cheaper price than pre-sterilized jars, which is why I ask.

Thanks guys!

In that case, bags are better...

Jars are heavy, and hard to ship... so they cost more.

But jars are often simpler to sterilize yourself and they can be used again and again. They are easier to seal.. and require fewer steps.

Spawn jars can be shaken, bags can be smashed around, to spread the myc... so that is a tie. Both colonize rather quickly.

Bags hold more substrate than jars... at least they can.

Bags with the right substrate can fruit great flushes invitro!

I would never spawn to bulk unless I had a pc... and a proven isolate... but that's me.

~I am not sure what you mean by Bags fruiting great flushes Invitro...could someone clarify, sorry I am reading but still learning. Do folks have bad luck with multi-spore to bulk as opposed to using an isolate? I know an isolate is preferable but should I not even waste time spawning bulk till I have practice isolating a strain? Much love all...~ Pixie ~

fruiting bags in vitro means allowing the shrooms to fruit in the bags. Isolate always seems to work better, but people still use multispore with plenty of success.

Well, im only trying this once (well twice), and a monotub seems much easier than fruiting a cake for only a couple of fruits.

Bags it is then.

Does anybody know if bags can dry out faster than a jar because its not completly sealed as well?

I live in a dry climate thats why im asking.

Not regarding price, which one is the better bet?

bags are made to keep the humidity and everything else at the right levels, you have no need to worry about it drying out. Just keep it at room temp and you can pretty much set and forget it
