Hi all,
I came across this fellow while hiking deep in the forests of Kauai, Hawaii. I've been trying to find out what it is - it was HUGE and so colorful. My friend's cell phone is there for scale.
Any ideas?

As snoot said, it's form the genus Amanita. Identifying it to species will be *much* tougher. You might look for a copy of Mushrooms of Hawaii. The regular field guides for North America will probably not be terribly useful there.
There's a reasonable chance that you could find a copy at a local public library.
Happy mushrooming!

Beautiful. Probably Amanita muscaria var. formosa. That's bigger than the ones I found. You are on to something my friend. Keep posting pictures of what you find, and enjoy the snorkleriffic landscape around you!!!
Oh yeah, muscaria have varying alkaloid contents, and I havn't heard any reports of consuming muscaria from the islands, so I wouldn't reccomend eating them, but, there's something very special in the pastures.
I see pine needles. Were there Ironwood, or do you know what kind of trees were growing nearby. May I ask what trail or area you were in?

Thanks for your help.
I was on the Nualolo Trail in Kokee. This fellow was in the middle of a bunch of small pine trees, I had to wedge myself between the branches to get a close up. This was about halfway through the trail where you exit the forest and start walking on the ridges.
My friend wanted to pick it because it was so beautiful, but I told her it'll probably explode once you touch it and spray poisonous spores into her face.
I have a picture of another one just like it - but before it, um, blooms I guess. I'll post it.
