Say Hello to my little friend Part 2 Re-potting
    #8018110 - 02/13/08 03:15 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I just replanted my cutting that I got about a week ago. I used a mixture of a pre-mixed cactus soil, some desert sand, and some top soil. All blended together in a 20 gallon bucket.

I was under the understanding to not water her for the next month and then gradually water here.

Right now my local temperatures are lows in the upper 30's/ low-mid 40's and highs low 60's/ mid-high 70's. Is it alright for me to leave her outside now?

Any tips and advice welcome? also I have a bunch of different fertilizers out in the garage, and was wondering what type of nutrients cactus really liked.

Just be sure the soil doesn't hold a lot of water and you should be fine.

Don't water until it has roots. A month is a good general guideline. Maybe once a week gently and slightly pull upwards on the cutting and if you feel it pull back that means it has roots and you can start watering lightly.

It's fine outside in those temps.

Cacti don't like a lot of nitrogen. Too much N can burn and kill a cactus. Nitrogen is the first number of the three numbers on fertilizers, N-P-K.

Just be sure it doesn't go below like 30F.

I'd put a layer of really, really coarse river sand on top.

Coarse, is the key word there...don't use regular sand.

Yeah Im kind of pissed that I didnt just get a full bucket of sand while I was out today. I just filled it about 1/2 way and figured I had enough pre-mixed cactus soil to fill it up.

Ill take your advice and get some more desert sand tomorrow and add it around the base of the cactus.

Ive been to 3 nurseries since looking for another cutting and have had no luck at all. I guess I must have been pretty lucky to find that one.

Shake it throught a wire mesh or screen. Make sure it's big chunky peices of sand, so the soil gets plenty of air and can dry quickly.

Fine sand will give your cacti root rot.

I would add the sand after it roots, not now.
