Making your own cat food
    #8016881 - 02/13/08 10:03 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Well after seeing how cat food is made (and what it's made out of) the gf and I are starting to feel really bad about feeding that to our cats. Along with our own food, which we now prefer to make our own over "prepared food", I think it would be good for our cats to eat a more natural diet.

I found this page that gives a pretty good recipe for raw-meat cat food, and am thinking of giving it a try.

Does anyone have any experience in feeding their cats a raw-meat diet? Did you use ground bones in it?

Dogs always get some kind of sickness or disease.

And cats are kickass, they clean up after there own shit and don't smell like dogs and there not noisy or anything.

uh why don't you just give you cat a good quality cat food?

To go that high quality, we would be paying like $40 for a bag of food. Making your own is cheap.

My cats 8 years old human years now and been feading her Purina cat food for all those years along with my other cat and shes perfectly healthy.

If you only had crappy food to eat, you wouldn't mind it. That doesn't mean you wouldn't prefer good food. Purina is crappy food, I'm sorry to say. There is very little difference between the so-called "premium" brands and the cheap no-name stuff. It's all the portions of the fish/chicken/whatever that they can't sell to humans. We won't eat it.

I'm not saying it's bad, or wrong in some way to feed your cat store bought food. I just don't want to feed that to my cats anymore.

Im sure after you know whats in our food you wouldn't wanna eat it no more neither.

Did you miss what I said?

Then why wouldn't I want to eat my own food? Do you think there's gremlins in my kitchen, poisoning my food when I'm not looking? :smirk:

I've always fed my animals table scraps and left overs, dogs, cats and mouse
always have bones when they're available. I've heard so many people claim it's not
good for them but I've never seen any adverse effects other than they prefer not
to eat canned or dry foods. I figure if nature had allowed them to eat raw meats
for millions of years then I shouldnt be the one to break the cycle

you may want to make the adjustment over a couple of weeks to prevent your cat
from getting diarrhea and pay closer attention for signs of worms as it can
happen with raw meats

alphabeatu... no offense, but there also seems to be the fact that trendal obviously loves his cat, as opposed to you, who obviously isn't a cat person. doesn't seem like you have the same interests at hand, so your advice might not necessarily be pertinent.

they probably call it starvation, maybe if you'd have fed the dog it wouldnt have gotten 'sick'

only time I've had a sick dog was when one ate a pillow, polyfil doesnt digest
well, it will pass but they tend to be miserable for a few days prior

i dont mind cats and have owned a couple,i admire them cause i like the big cats but they do make me itch around my nose but i dont know if its the actual cat or maybe it gotten pollen all over it

i was just mentioning that this 45 dollar bag of gourmet cat food had gold leaf packaging and really looked like a lot of effort went into the packaging

3 days ago i seen a new commercial showing a'scientificly' designed new dog biscuits that clean their teeth

funny stuff

i used to bake mackerel loaf for my cats every week and keep it in the freezer. they loved it and didn't eat any commercial cat food. now i feed them lifes abundance. you need some special ingredients if you want to make your own food. i got the recipe from dr. pitcairn's complete guide to natural health for dogs and cats. it's worth getting and has alot of other recipes too.
