Any one think of a place to find these locally where they won't be expensive? I can't ever recall seeing one in use. What are these things commonly used for? Thanks.

I've always gotten mine at a second hand stores, if your nice they will give them to you for about $15 or you can buy them new any where from 30 to 50 if you look in the wrong place. They are used for making beer and wine and some freaks out there put change into them.

So I found this dude on craigslist that's gonna hook me up with a capper, a bunch of caps, 2 cases of bottles, fermentation locks, hydrometer, thermometer, etc, etc. (Basically everything I need minus ingredients) for $50. I def. should jump on that shit, right?

That sounds like a great deal, you better go get that shit! You have a big (2 gallon?) stainless steal pot to make you wort in right?

I was just planning on using my 23 quart presto pressure cooker with no lid to cook in, and my 16 quart to sterilize tools and such. That will work fine, right?

hmm didn't think about using a pc to sterilize good thinking! yeah the 23 quart should work make sure you scrub it and it doesn't have any rust in it. You wouldn't happen to be getting a wort chiller with that would you?

Don't think it comes with a wort chiller, but will check tomorrow when I nab everything. Will snap some pics to post.

And if you look above the back beer bottle box in the first picture, you'll see an ectoplasmic orb, which must mean my garage is haunted.

I believe I have the prequel to that book and its a good book, I;d recommend it. Ghosts are good for keeping contams out so its good thing. When are you going to start brewing?

Yeah that book was published in 1991. I've got "The complete joy of homebrewing-third edition" which is an edit and republish of the original, put out in 2003. I've read the whole first part about the first batch and all, just waiting to brew my first beer before I read the rest.
I'm actually hoping to start sometime either this weekend or next week. Just depends on when I can get some ingredients(The only thing I'm missing) The closest homebrew store is an hour away, and I don't even know what kinda beer i want to brew yet. (thinking wheat to start) Just gonna do it the easy way and get the ingredient kit though, the one that all you have to do is brew and combine. I actually just picked up a partner in crime today though, so hopefully i'll get ingredients this weekend and get started.

Do both? I'm going to do an apricot or pumpkin for someone, and a pale ale

Yeah he wants to do a cranberry wheat beer. I don't really care, just want to get the first batch knocked out. Any thoughts on a decent wheat kit that will have all of the ingredients I need? (Obviously minus the cranberry)

I'm debating between
this one: ttp://morebeer.com/view_product/18328/102178
or

(copy paste, add an "h")

I'd say American Wheat for the cranberry because it sounds like a rather simple beer without a complex flavor, and the other one sounds like it'd be a good beer kit thats easy and has a good flavor depending on your taste in beer

Do you think I could get away with just boiling cranberries in the wort, then straining?

nope if you boil fruit, it will turn to jam and you'll have a murky beer. Go with fresh fruit, wash'em good, then drop them into carboy and pitch the yeast. thats pretty simple way your suppose to put them into a nylon sack and some other stuff but I haven't done it yet
