pc'd a few jars, before they get nocc'd i was wondering how much water is too much. theres no visible water, but the grain appear wet and the extra small ones are sticking to the sides of the jar, but theres no clumping and they seem to pour ok. I can take a pic if a pro reccomends it, but i dont wanna take pics for a n00b's opinion.
TIA.

Haha i dont think you understand the concept of a community dude, some poeple could be pros all around and some people could be new to certain aspects but have done things such as this a million times, wether the person be a newb or a pro pics always help. I have a low post count that considers me a newb i guess but i have pcd a hell of alot of birdseed and spawned it i would not call myself a pro but i wouldnt call myself a newb on that aspect. So use everyone's experiance dont think that someone is better then someone else. What Tek did you use for the Wbs

i wasnt trying to belittle someone, i just didnt want someone who has grown a jar or two to tell me to take pics so they can guess. IMO someone experienced in wbs would understand what im talking about.
IDK what tek i used, ive been reading this site for a couple years now and just did it my way.
soaked for 24hrs, dumped into a nylon and drained over night (i wont do it this way again), when the time came to jar the stuff it was too wet so i put it back in my stainless bowls and threw it in the oven for a lil bit to dry it some more. it felt like it was too dry when i pulled it out and mixed it, but obviously i was wrong.
how do you know when the moisture content is high but ok, or too high and should be redone.

I think it's better to shimmer the wbs for half an hour, which makes them to soak as much water as possible. You have to figure out how much water you need for it to completely vanish, so you don't have to rinse at all. at least that's what I did and it worked just fine!

There are different opinions about this but I got by far the best results with shimmering. Water content was always perfect, while I had the same problem as r311ik, when I soaked them. Shimmering them makes them absorb the highest possible water content without popping, and since this is what you want, it seems to be a good decision
It at least worked for me...

I use Doc's WBS tek with good results ....
Sometimes the WBS looks 'dry' .... does not clump or stick to the sides of the jars at all ... and it works great.
Sometimes the WBS is wetter at the bottom of the jar and clumps a bit ... and shaking the hell out of the jar can redistribute the wetter and dryer grains .... and it has worked out well.
If you follow a good tek, you should be OK .... soaking/steeping/simmering will infuse the grains with moisture .... moisture within the grains. When you drain the grains is when you deal with the moisture on the outside.
My personal preference is 'dryer rather than wetter'.
Good luck

The maximum of soaked water is what you want when dealing with grains. The moisture that fucks up grows is the superfluous on the outside, which is why you do draining, which you already said.
Guess the shimmering was doc's method to prepare grains...
Anyway, soaking and draining works fine, as well and I don't want to say, that shimmering is better, -at least for me- it's easier to control the moisture content.

I've always soaked my WBS then drained for about an hour and a half - two hours then PCed for 90min. I have also soaked then simmered, but that bursts all the millet and makes the rest of the grains all soggy. Next time I am gonna try Fahkface's recommendation and just simmer. Waiting for the soak is a pain in the ass. On a side note, Fankface, do you have a higher contam rate because the endospores in the WBS don't have time to germinate without the soak?
