Hello Shroomery.com!
Well, I will tell you a little bit about whats going on. I am new to the Shroomery. I actually heard about this site from a RR (Roger Rabbit) Youtube video I have experienced "Magic Mushrooms" three times and have always had an amazing experience. I have always wanted to grow my own Cabensis' and have now found the information to do so.
I have read and reviewed an enormous amount of information over the past week or so. I will be asking questions and I hope the experienced cultivators will help me out along the way. I intend to update this with reports of my progress and any new questions that I am sure I will have along the way. I do not want to make a new topic for every question I may have. I also intend to search for answers via the forums however, I am sure I will still need clarification from time to time.
I have decided to cultivate B+ as I have read that they are one of the simplier strains to grow. I also have Ecuador and Porto Rica strains.
I also decided to construct an incubator similar to the one found in PF-Tek for Simple Minds
I would like some insight as I found little on the fruiting chamber used in the RR video on youtube. This seems to be an extremely simple fruiting chamber. I would like to know has anyone used this method or something similar?
I have already purchased some of the more basic supplies.
Purchased:
-Vermiculite -Perlite -Brown Rice Flower -(10) Half-Pint Jars -Heavy Duty Tin-Foil -Rubber Gloves & Sleeves -Rubbing Alcohol -Bleach -Water-Bottle Sprayer -Two Tubs (Inoculation) -Aquarium Water Heater -Thermometer & Hygrometer -Large Fruiting Chamber -Large "Glove Box" -Pressure Cooker -Lysol -Proxcide
Still to get:
anything else?!?!
*Updated* Feb 21st, 2008
Well, I have inoculated my jars and I hope that I will have minimal contams. I do have a qucik question... I was PC'in my jars and left three of them in the PCer for about oh 8 hours... at 12psi... does that hurt my substrate or just make sure I have killed all contams lol?
Update: Febuary 27th, 2008 So, it has been exactly 7 days since inoculation. I will say I am pleased so far I have growth in all of my jars. (Nine I believe lol) Took about 4 days to see the first growth in one of my jars. I was of course worried about the growth I did see as it started out kind of light and what i thought was "whispy". However, it now looks like very bright white rope strands. Exactly how myc should look from what I understand. I wish I could post of some pictures of my jars however, I cannot get a clear shot with my camera... I don't know how you guys do it... well, I may just have a crappy digital camera. I also inoculated 11 WBS jars... So I hope to see growth ina few days.
Here are some pictures more to come!

heh the white spot on the far right top jar of wbs is actually the "filter" that was pressed into the jar during inoculation... I am interested see how the poor guy fairs... lol

looks good so far, except i really recommend a decent pressure cooker. they run 50-75$ and will def. make your life easier in the long-term. you should also get a bottle of hydrogen peroxide just to have, and load up on Oust so you can spray the shit out of the room youre doing clean work in... other than that, keep reading and dont get caught.

Whatcha gotta do is whip up some agar, noc up with a print or SS, select a particularly rizo sector, transfer to another slant, and repeat tell ya have an isolated substrain. Do this till you have several masterculters of multiple substrains. From there noc up a couple malt/dextrose lc's. week later inject 2.6ccs solution into WBS thats been pc'd for n hour n a half at 15psi. Incubate at 84.3 exactly. once completely colonized spawn to some Hp and straw, incubate for nother 5.3 days then case with ph adjusted 50/50+. Once mycel starts poppin up, place in an fc with 95 percent rh and 74 degrees and a 6500 kelven blue light spectrum light. After the pinning innitiation, drop humidity to 88. In another week or two y'll have some some shrooms. Simple really

search for "RR shotgun fruiting chamber". its a very simple and effective fruiting chamber that can be made extremely easily.
welcome to the shroomery!
also, just as everyone else has mentioned, when you're ready to get serious about mycology the first thing you will need is a good pressure cooker, you can get by without it while doing the basics but when you're ready to move to the next level thats what you will need

Really! I was about to say "Give the guy a break".
Truthfully READ, READ, READ. Another suggestion is using Search posts for specific questions you have. When you have been here longer you'll learn to look for specific posters who really know their shit. ( ) Be selective as to who you take advice from. Go with some of the more experienced people.
A pressure cooker would definitely make it go easier.

Alright, so I definitly seeing that a pressure cooker is ideal. I would rather just purchase this out-right. Does not make sense to me to spend like $20 on a big pot then, $75 on a cooker like a little while later. Also, it seems as if it will definitly help with contamination which, from what I see as being the number one killer for newbs.

True. Once a cake is fully colonized without contams it almost takes care of itself. That is the biggest hurdle to overcome. Saw you were planning on a glove (or technically a still-air box) another good decision.
Good luck.

Dont do it, its way too east and you will get confused, or you will have no patients, and ask q's like "when will i see growth or when will i see pins" +3-7 days to see first growth +1-3 weeks for colonization +1-2 weeks to pins after birthing +3-7 days for pins to fully develope these are rough estimates based on my experience with PF cakes I have seen print to print in 23 days under ideal conditions, average 31-35 days tho. try your PF cakes then try WBS or Rye and see how much faster it is than PF. Ive had mushroom in just over 2 weeks with WBS knocked up with an isolated agar wedge

Noob factor :
Add 3-6 days on all of those before you post asking why they didnt grow.

I definitly am still learning about all the different styles on growing. I believe that after a few cakes have completed fruiting I will try to work into something that will yield faster and more Cubensis'. Although I do not think I will have a problem with patients. I know that this is a project that can take almost two months I will defenitly post up some pictures of my progress and contraptions in the coming weeks.
Since, I am a male... and have no idea where to purchase a pressure cooker... any ideas where I can pick one up. I saw some at local grocery stores but, they were smaller and held I think 7.5psi.

Definately add a few days before asking that is Ideal conditions vs semi ideal. for a PC, check craigslist first in your area, i found a 41qt mirromatic on there in my area for $25 bucks. not saying you will find one that cheap but you never know, or walmart has some decent ones for $45-$50

Thank you for the heads up on Craig's List. I did a search and only found a 6qt that was not exactly in my area lol. I ended up purchasing a 8qt from... Sears I believe. I wish I could have found a 41qt lol make my life easier.

Amazon.com has a wide selection at all different price ranges. I got my 21 quart there for 100 bucks. I can fit 10 quart jars in it at a timme. Definitely ALOT more time efficient than the 6 quart I was using before.

Wow, I will have to take a look on Amazon.com It is very time consuming to pressure cook my 1/2 pint jars three at a time.
Anyone have any tips on taking a picture maybe, any tricks you might use besides purchasing a new camera lol... thanks

use the macro feature on your camera... it looks like a little flower/mountains usually... set it to the flower setting and it allows for an up close picture to be taken with a decent focus... another tip would be to take the pictures in daylight or under bright lights with out the flash on, it will distort your "close ups" or produce a flash against the jar like this one taken in less than ideal conditions (art photographer, artist i know how to use a camera)
