perhaps im pointing out the obvious, but have you guys noticed that almost everyone that uses horse dung gets gigantic shrooms.
by the way, if the only place to get pooh is at a stable dont get the old wet stuff just kick back and wait for a new load and dry that. makes sense huh.

so it seems apparent that fresh poo is the best...but will older composted poo (along with some leaves, straw, wood chips) from a stable be sufficient? Do you guys think this will be ok and should the pasturizing procedure be the same (temp/time?)

You may think you are sure, but you are mistaken. In bulk neglect, the manure adds greatly to the substrate. Do you think I added it for fun? Don't you think I ever compared straight straw vs. straw/dung? Don't you think I ever grew off of straight dung? Here's a straight dung picture I recently reposted:



Your problem is that you are trying to compare store bought cow manure vs. field or stable collected horse manure. That's like saying that since perlite isn't nutritious, then BRF/verm cakes won't grow shrooms.

Collect your dung from a field, and I think you will change your mind about cow manure.

On the other hand, great pics. Way to go!

I think you misunderstood. I wasn't comparing, simply stating that there's very little if any use for store bought cow manure. I am in complete agreement that field collected, leached cow manure is excellent for a mushroom substrate.
