uninstalling win98

So I finally got around to trying to install ubuntu on my old old PC. Unforchunetly I cant even get the one partition there is on the thing formatted and ready for installation. Win 98 wont let me boot off the CD drive (Window Server 2003)
My initial plan was to boot off the server CD and use its partitioning software to wipe the C drive of all i files including win98. But that went up in smoke when the computer didn't boot off the CD in the drive. So I attempted to find a way to make 98 boot off a CD rom to no avail. Then I tried formatting the drive while running win98 but obviously windows didn't allow me to do so with everything on one partition. Then I tried using a win 98 floppy boot disk (what they recommended) to start up the PC in dos mode with CD rom accessibility still, to no avail.
I'm supposed to do the same for a friend who is currently running a fuxored win xp machine, which I know the server disk should work on but I'd still like to try at home to see if I even have ubuntu burnt correctly onto the CD. So if you can help me at least get 98 off my old computer that would be sweet!

think its called cmos setup, or dos setup..i can't remember but you press f8 or some shit when it tells you after you hit the power button.
then change the boot sequence
default is something like A: C: D:
in this example D: is your cd drive
you want this to come before your C: drive or maybe even before the A:

That could be your problem right there. I opted for the free boot disc by mail rather than having to deal with downloading, formating, and burning Ubuntu to disc. It only took three weeks to arrive and works like a charm, I haven't looked back since. Also, I was under the impression Ubuntu needs windows to run, or at least the initial setup. I ran the boot disc on xp only changing the order the drives boot in and it works flawlessly.
