Dunk & Roll vs. just Dunk (no rolling in verm)?
    #8014462 - 02/12/08 07:08 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Searched already, nothing.

I'm sure you've seen this: http://www.shroomery.org/5185/What-is-the-dunk-tek
Which displays this comparison picture:

But this tek does not roll in verm. The "Dunk AND ROLL" tek is wildly more popular, just wondering what the purpose for rolling in verm is? Would their be an even MORE yield? Or is it the same yield, just serving as a contam barrier and a moisture lock? Or what?

Thanks.

I believe the outer layer of vermiculite aids in the retention of water. I also believe that if a cake is fully colonized (which it definitely should be if you're dunking it) it can fight off contamination pretty well on its own. I don't see how a thin layer of vermiculite would do anything worthwhile as far as contamination resistance. I could be wrong though, I'm new to growing and am just running of the information I've gotten so far (I had the exact same question).

vermiculite provides a nice little mico climate right on the cakes' surface ..... soaks up moisture as you mist and then evaporates it off ...... good for pinning ... etc. ... also good for fruit development ..... the dunk provides the moisture necessary for large fruit bodies.

I think the cakes would be better off without vermiculite in terms of contamination resistance. The verm holds a fair bit of water so it's like more bang for your dunk (haha, not very funny) plus the verm holds water every time you mist. It's supposed to be like a small casing just holds water for your cake.

yup its for water like he said micro climate they dry out really fast if you dont keep your RH really high. I havent had much luck just fruiting cakes.i finally have 1 cake that is pinning . I cant get them to fruit in my FC .So I brake then up in 6 qt tubs. Cover with saran wrap and incubate for a couple days 1-3 to nit back together. Then I case and so on. heres some creepers growing off 1 pint cake broken up and cased. If you get these size tubs I would go with 2 pint cakes in each . I harvested today and I am trip right now lol

creepers on the left mexi albinos on the right

good luck

I've got 12 (6 Cambodia, 6 Mazatapec)  fully colonized 1/2 pint cakes currently in the "Dunk" stage. My plan is to Roll 6 (3 Cambodia, 3 Mazatapec) and compare the results. I'll let you know how it goes.
