sweeeet. the devils hair shot is incredible, along with the candies. Shit, they're all amazing. The rusty spored guy with purple staining is probably a cortinarius.

Those look like good guesses. I was at a loss so I just made up Devil's Hair.

So you are given the chance to make up a name and you go with "Devil's Hair"... I would have called it "Jesus hair". But that's because this little light o mine burns bright... for a lord whose hair is made of fungi.
It would be cool if it were a Cordycep as Cactu mentioned. I don't suppose you excavated the base to find a hapless grub serving as the mushroom's substrate.

I don't think it was a Cordycep. There were several in a small area - I pulled one up and it seemed to be growing from the ground.

Nice pictures. I hunted in Santa Cruz for a long time, and the habitat and mushrooms look darn similar

Santa Cruz is a great area. I lived there for many years and love to visit.
These images were taken further north, near Tomales Bay off of Highway 1 near Point Reyes. It's a beautiful area with Douglas Fir, Oak and Madrone. Lots of mushrooms too!
In fact, I'd say it was worth the poison oak rash I picked up out there - but just barely.

Oh, tomales bay is great picking! Found tons of Candys, a few hedgehogs, and some other random stuff.
I gotta get your number and hook up for a hunt sometimes.
