Is it contam?
    #8014274 - 02/12/08 06:26 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

http://s270.photobucket.com/albums/jj101/jp312206/

please go to the following link for pics of the jars

sorry for this, you guys probly get this alot but i cant decide if these have sour rot or not

Could you guys tell me if these jars are contamed? I took pictures of different jars with flash on and off and also with different background lighting.

this is about 2 and a half weeks after inoculation

they were pressure cooked and injected with spore syringes

they were kept at 82-84 degrees

i was very cautious and clean in the proceedure

After i gave them a shake there was a slimey residue on the inside of the jars

they do smell strongly im not sure if its just because its moist wbs or if its something wrong

to much water. i got the same problem. throw it away and try again. don't try to wait it out like i did. i waited 2 months to see if it would fix itself. it didn't. start over and use less water

damn, well i will strain better and longer next time, as for the contam...what can i do to prevent that?

All of them have growth that looks the same so does that mean that all of them got it?

I was very clean in the whole procedure, had the incubator sitting 1.5 feet up, and even put a hepa filter in the closet it was all in.

its not because of the excess water but it sure does look like there is excess. They are bad.

how did you prep the seed? simmered it, strained it, canned it, pc'ed it?

I simmered, strained it, put it in jars, pc'd let them sit over night then knocked em up

so its safe to say that the wbs was too moist? i shall try again

no its not safe to say. How did the excess water get in there? Did you notice any pooling water after you pc'ed?
How did you inoculate them?
If it was a ss, where did you get it from.
Did you remove the lid or open the jar?

Water is not the cause of contams although it can increase the rate of contams.

we need to figure out where they came from.

i did not see any pooling water after pcing,
i inoculated 3-4 ccs of b+ spores from the hawks eye
i inoculated through polyfill that was plugging up small holes in the jars

IMO you must shake your jars ASAP before you leave them to sit all night to cool off, its the final touch on the water content. You want to dispurse the grains evenly with that shake so while they are cooling off, they are dispursing the water to eachother, and visa versa.

If your PC run left heavier, wetter grains on the bottom -and dry ones on the top, and you let it sit like that, those grains will stay that way. Moving them all around and even lets them trade off water better.

I did what you did for my first four jars and they all fell to contamination. I made up four more jars but I did ~24hr soak, rinse, strain, PC and they are very healthy. I was also very anal about removing the "floating" black seeds.

Simmering works for some, it didn't work for me. Try switching it up.
