How small of a space can my mono-tub be in?

I am looking to start my first grow and I have spent countless hours here on the Shroomery reading all I can to decide how I want to go about it. I have lately been reading alot about Mono-tubs and think that the "set it and forget it" is appealing as well as the lack of needed materials (humidifiers, misters, etc) I am thinking about using a 19 qt rubbermaid like this for my tub (I read that 19 qts is about as small as you want to go)
 (Dimensions are 16.5x11x10.4in)
Now for my question. I am trying to make this as stealth as possible to keep away unwanted attention and I was thinking about using my bedside night stand as a way to conceal my tub. I want to cut off the drawers and leave just the faces of the drawers to be exposed and place my mono-tub inside this. The space I am working with is about 24''x 19''x 14'' and I am concerned whether a small space like that will be enough room for adequate air to move in and out of the tub through the polyfill? Here are some pictures of the night stand:

Do you think this is too cramped of a space or do you guys think I have something to work with? Any input is appreciated.

looks too cramped but it's worth a shot. i don't see how any fresh air will get in there. now i wanna know.......soccer ball drawer handles and trying to hide your grow. sounds like you're still livin with mom. better be careful. hope she doesn't decide to do some laundry, because when she goes to put away your he-man underwear, your busted.

Since I have soccer ball handles on my dresser everyone is going to take me as some little kid? Given, yes, I still live with my mom but she is fully aware of me smoking weed among other things and doesnt have too much of a problem with it so I think I am fine in that area.

with that being said... i think i'll try to help you out since you've done your research.
Monotubs are the way to go, they're set and forget. If you want you can refer to my journal entrys for some of the simplest teks involving the steps up to fruiting your monotub. It covers Grains, Bulk Substrates, Casing, Building your monotub, simple examples of all the measurements/parameters...etc. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/postlist.php/Journal/158325
And no, if your going to just have the monotub in there it will need something for adequate FAE. A fan might be too much for that small of a space, its going to be touchy. I would get a small fan and point it away from the tubs on low. The air will circulate around the tub.

Looks like if you could cut the back out of it and leave a six inch space between the back of it and the wall you could use it and it would get enough FAE. Soccer balls rule

large_dose - Thank you for the helpful response! I was thinking about placing a type of fan in there but I have read that you dont want a fan blowing directly at the tub but with such a small space, seems like there is no where except towards it. Thanks for the link to your journal, I see tons of info that will be useful to me in there
joshua m - I also considered this and possibly placing my small room fan along that same wall farther down and have it blow across the wall. Would something like this work you think?

I agree with the guys concerning the small fan.
I picked one up at Walmart that is very small .... face diameter approx. 4" and it is very quiet.
As mentioned, you could open the back of your night stand up somewhat .... then point the fan (or it could oscillate) so some of the air hits the openings in the back of the night stand .... the air will 'ricochet' around in the night stand and should be good for FAE.....
Good luck with the 'stealth' operation ..... I used to attempt stealth .... (and I'm seriously old enough to know better .... like old enough to be a grandfather!) .... the drama of stealth was too much for me .... honesty, with cool people, is the best policy.

If you do use a fan put in LOW you don't want to dry out your casings.

Alright I will make sure to do that. The fan I have is a honeywell fan that has 3 settings, and on the lowest setting, I can barely feel the draft on my hand where the tub will be. Is this good enough air circulation or should it be up higher? The last thing I want to do is dry out my casings so I will most likely keep it as low as possible.

You have to move your monotubs out of storage to fan them with great regularity, especially after you have cased and are waiting for pins, all the way through the flushes. Don't put it somewhere it will be hard to get in and out of, they are awkward enough to deal with when full and heavy and you are hunched over in weird spaces.
There is also a big difference between smoking a little weed and a felony manufacturing charge, not that your mom would care about that or anything...

I was under the impression that mono-tubs required no fanning or misting at all. How often would you suggest fanning? I am thinking with the proper holes cut into the tub with the fan blowing indirectly on it, that should be adequate FAE.

you shouldn't be needing to fan your monotub.. the polyfil holes will do that for you if they are located well... but since you are placing this tub in such a small area you should be using the fan to exchange the air around the tub.. (not the air in it) because you don't want to be exchanging expelled air with expelled air.. hope that makes sense

The only time you don't fuck with a monotub is right after spawning, basically until it colonizes the sub completely... even in those circumstances if it goes past 5 days without being done it needs some FAE to keep trich at bay which loves oversaturation. Your entire tub will be covered in trich if you leave it sealed up for days on end, even with half a dozen 1" polyfill stuffed holes at the casing level. Also your flushes and pinsets will suck due to no FAE.
I watched a 30 qt monotub that had just perfectly broken through the casing layer go completely green because I wasn't able to get to it and fan it for 36 hours. Every other tub of its exact composition (3 of them) flushed 2000G wet first round, the unfanned one... NOTHING because it was fucked with trich. I would question those who say they don't require FAE, and lots of it.

I feel you man...
Right after i put my monotub into fruit mode, i left town for 2 days and forgot to turn the fan on to circulate air in the room. All went to trich hell.

So whats with the "set it and forget it" mentality that I always hear about concerning mono-tubs? I guess this is just a myth then? Would fanning twice a day while running a fan for most of the day be sufficient airflow for my tub then? Thanks for all the advice btw, keep it coming. I am taking in all the info I can to make my first grow as successful as possible.

ha ha, i just did the same exact thing to a night stand! it's for incubation. i've got a 25 watt under cabinet light inside on the top, a dimmer and a timer. i can dial in just the right temp if i have to, normally it's warm enough though. i'll try and post a pic of it

Compare to soaking perlite, draining it, punching all the holes in your FC for shotgun style as RR specifies, setting up separate spawn trays, casing them individually, etc. I don't know if Ron Popeil would ever apply his wonderful little phrase to monotubs, but in comparison there is a lot less setup and monitoring of the variables at play.

Generally I have read that it is insufficient, even RR has stated as much, but I usually only have time to fan my bins when I wake up in the morning and when I get home from work. It is better if you can fan them more, probably 4-6 times daily would be ideal. Anything less than twice is asking for trouble.

I think I could do up to 4 daily. Simply just taking off the lid and fanning it real fast isnt hard at all if thats all the real labor im going to have to put into these things while they are fruiting. But what about misting? I started thinking about the light setup in there today. Should I just mount one 6500k blue(?) light in there and run it on a timer or something? Would 12/12 be best?

I have a monotub in my closet, not because the people I live with care but I prefer it hidden if people come over. Tomorrow I am picking up a fishtank pump and I am going to mount a cup with water inside of the tub and have the pump bubble through the water. Then just leave that on all the time, I am thinking this will work.
I am going to use a system like this. http://www.northernbrewer.com/pics/fullsize/aerationsystem.jpg

Thats a good idea for my FAE problem right now. I am starting to wonder if using a mono tub setup is just not the right way to go with the space I am working with. Do you guys think maybe a PMP or something along those lines would be better or should I stick with the mono tub?
