Went To My First AA Meeting Today

It was pretty weird at first, but the next guy whispered into my ear that they're pretty cool with religion. So I hope they don't mind my atheism. Heard a lot of cool stories today. Quite an experience actually. The only problem is that I'm drunk again. But I have a shitload of thoughts to sleep on. This might work. Next meeting on Friday.

Bill Wilson, the founder of AA, thought LSD was an amazing therapeutic tool. Good luck getting that monkey off your back!

Alcoholism is a matter of life or death. The shit will kill you eventually so at least you are taking the right steps towards recovery.
I have been to hundreds of meetings yet I still drink, but I'm contemplating on going back because the meetings did seem to help me and serve as a support group. I also have a problem with the "God" thing they try to drill into you. It's mentioned in almost every step.
I heard of another support group called Smart Recovery that seems pretty good also so I may try that out also. Hang in there bud.

From one addict to another good luck my friend. When you get the chance vist my thread titled honesty and addiction, as i am currently in iop class struggling with an addiction to painkillers. I recieve alot of support from fellow shroomery members, and i swear by it as a tool to recovery. Listen to what these guys say and always keep a positive attitude. Today was my first day with AA/NA too. From the sound of it yours isn't too intensive? They're making me go in 8:30-12 MWF and 8:30-3:30 Tuesday and Thursday. For atleast 4 weeks. But I just got discharged from an inpatient program, I was hooked on opiates.
It kinda sucks because I can't work, and I'm having to withdraw from school until fall semester. But after two weeks I'll have the decision to switch to the night program, which is still Monday - Friday but is from 6:30 until 9:30.
But good luck man. I'm not a religious person either and would rather the program be unaffiliated with any religion, but I don't care enough for it to really bother me. I'd just go with it if I were you and just ignore or altre the god part to your liking.

Chocolate too. Both of my parents have been alcoholics their whole lives. My Dad hasn't had a drink in probably like 20 years, but he still has meetings every week. They have a little support group for guys and they used to have meetings at each others houses every week.
Some of my earliest memories are of Friday nights having my Dad and 10 other guys sitting in the living room swilling coffee, chain-smoking cigarettes, eating chocolates and cake, and seriously discussing feelings and what happened in their lives that week and what they did to keep sober.
It was always strange to see my Dad like this, because he was a welder his whole life and not a real emotional guy. So to sneak out of my room and hear him talking about this stuff to a bunch of other working guys really impacted my feelings on emotions and sharing things with others.

AA is good for some people, but it can also be really bad - Some chapters are accused of operating more like manipulative cults.
Take a look at the orange papers website so you know what to avoid and don't get too sucked in.

If the program is ran how it should be and by the guidelines, it should never even be able to be interpreted this way at all.

Yeah, I was confused by that guy's statement as well.
