yeah, they do look like some type of gymnopilus. Can you get a picture of a picked mushroom showing the stem and gills. I'm pretty sure they are gymnopilus, but wait for others with more experience to chime in. Looks like you have a bunch of em.

they've completely dried now and the blueing isn't easy to see. It is just barely visible where the gills meet the stem. I would post a picture of them dry but i figured that it wouldn't help much. Also I tasted a tiny piece of a cap and it was extremely bitter.

Are those cell phone pics? If they are, borrow someones digi, and go back out to that spot and take some close ups. Still pretty fucking sure those are gymnopilus, anyone else?

Yea, I agree, the bitter taste, prolific fruiting on wood and orange spore deposit are convincing.

Did the caps have fibers on them? They should of had a velvet texture to an extent while moist.
*Edit: Nevermind these are spect. I've only found luteofolius, I wouldn't know.

If there is a veil left on the stem (which i think i can see in number two) then its probably a gymnopilus.

I've noticed luteofolius with only partial veils or even no apparent veil.

Somebody - Are you 100% sure of the spore colour??
I don't see any green or blue (indicative of psilocin content) bruising or staining...
If all I had to go with was a photo, I'd say Hypholoma fasciculare, "Sulfur Tuft" which have dark purple-brown spores...
They are also quite bitter, and poisonous.

Yes I could see that. The shadows are suspiciously purplish, which would mean poison!
Make some good spore prints and see if you can get some photos that show any staining.

I have circled areas which look suspiciously coated in purple-brown spore deposits, and have red arrows pointing to what appear to be rings of purple-brown spore deposits on the stipe.

I could be wrong...

Copy and paste that broken link above (i tried fixing it, i'll ask ythan about it) and open it in your browser. You'll see a lot more photos of Hypholoma fasciculare.
I have personally seen more clusters of these, at every different stage of development, than I ever wish to see again. Well okay, maybe that's a stretch, but you know what i mean.

They are taking over like suburbs. The stems in op's pics look a little thick though for sulphs. And that rusty colored remnant on the stem is screaming gymnopilus. However, the caps do look a little off, and that purple stuff is misleading, but might just be shadow.
