I just picked this stuff up 10 minutes ago at Wal Mart in the gardening section. "Plantation Products--Seed Starter, Professional Growers Mix". 8 quart bag $2.50. Check out the ingredient list (as the bag reads)--Sphagnum peat, horticultural vermiculite, perlite, wetting agent, and lime for pH balance.--------Where has this stuff been hiding all this time? Casing can't get any easier.

isnt it called potting soil??? I use that stuff all the time. They used to have a 50/50 mix that had all the shit you just said without the perlite.
Cactus soil works great also

Tahoe, I just checked the pH-neutral. This stuff looks nothing like potting soil--it looks just like the 50/50+ casing mix that takes too much of my time mixing and trying to adjust the pH (except for the perlite, but it appears minimal).

the ingredients vary depending on location. Jiffy-mix also contains peat moss and verm in some places, but where I am at the verm is substituted with perlite.
Just a reminder to check the ingredients as they vary by location.

That stuff uses dolomite limestone: CaCO3 and MgCO3
Mg inhibits fruiting and pinsets.
Also, its usless due to the fact its so freaking slow to have it do what its sposed too. Mushrooms don't like to wait- they got shit to do, unlike your lawn that needs it nice and slow so it don't fry.

In respect to Civ, he may be right. I did 4 separate casings, 2 with the "Plantation Products" mix, and 2 with my regular 50/50+ casing mix. The 2 casings with my 50/50+ do appear to have a better pinset than the "PP" mix. All the casings are pinning though. I'll get back with results from the first flush. (note dates on posts)

Sounds like to be is just seed starting mix. It's been done many times. Not as good as Peat/Verm/Gypsum/Lime though.

What about Mirical Grow Moisture Control, about a year ago there was a big rave about that stuff wasn't there? Or did it not work out like the guy said after peeps tried it?
Asking cuz I have a bag, and 2 mono tubs colonizing, rather fruit big cakes then put that MGMC if it is bad stuff.

1 teaspoon of hydrated lime per cup of peat is only about 2%. i thought 5% was a more acceptable number?
also, most soil products that have some sort of ph balancing ingredient, balance the ph to what favors plants which is usually around 6.5. a proper casing should have a ph of 8-8.5.

You don't want over that rate because hydrated lime is strong and works immediately once water hits it
