I'm stuck, need advice on grow
    #8009752 - 02/11/08 05:31 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I have three 12inch cubic blocks of myc'. I did grain to Hpoo a while back in square buckets and forgot about them, now they are absolutely 110% colonized and look a cubic foot of concrete. Do I break them apart and case? or try to dunk and roll the damn things? Would I be wasting the inner myc' if I left it in a block? Or mess them up if I broke them apart? I'm stumped on what to do.

You could just case, then introduce to fruiting conditions. You would'nt waste the extra deep substrate per se, as it would support more flushes. There is probably a reasonable point of diminishing returns on that though. Too thin of a substrate will result in poor performance.

I could see you doing either with them, though the more you mess with the mycelium the greater contamination risk.

From what I understand, that point of diminishing return is ~4-5 inches of substrate depth. My advice would be to just cut the subs in half so you have six subs from your 3 buckets. Case those, and fruit them. Good Luck.

I like the idea of cutting in half, actually, I would like the extra flushes also. Please keep the opinions coming in, I'd like to do something with them tonight.

if they are 12" tall then cut them into 3 4" slabs and
dunk them for 12 hrs.
"why 3rds and not in half?" you ask, because you only need 4-5" of sub.

you also get more surface area. more surface area = more room for pins.

cut into 3rds.
dunk 12 hrs.
remove them from water and let drain.
put in a fc and fruit.

if you cut it open and its nasty and not myc then toss it.

try breaking one up. it wouldnt hurt. ive had rye jars colonize forever and was still able to break them up. spawning and casing would be the most productive way to go.

Yo, it all depends on how long they have been colonized for. If they haven't been colonized for long enough to dry them out then cut them into sections for a fruiting chamber, (DT, MT, greenhouse) case with fresh casing, let colonize, and go. Trick is if the substrate has gone dormant, is to wake it up with water and FAE.

If it looks kinda dry, hydrate it by giving it some filtered/store bought water in each substrate you plan to rejuvenate. Use your own science on that(watering in my experience has been much better than misting) I just water it like a plant if necessary. With all that substrate you should be able to make several casings, or a few DT setups.

Question is again the time it's been fully colonized. They would want FAE, a casing, and H2O in order to start fruiting.

Have fun as always,

-CK

P.S. Of course if you slice the subs up then you should alcohol sterilize you knife before-hand and take caution of contams, but your fully colonized sub will be very resistant to that.

I'd fruit it as one big block, uncased.

I'm still unsure of what to do (too much advice). RR's advice certainly is the easiest, and I am feeling kinda' lazy.

Looks like that's the way I'm headin'. I don't have a whole lot of space left in the FC. I'm gonna stack them on top of each other and make a myc' man.
