Quentin is great. He can do dialog (among other things) like nobody else.
I'm also a fan of Robert Rodriguez (2nd half of grindhouse)

i never got to see the other grindhouse movie, just saw death proof. i love the dialouge in all the films. death proof was just rediculous, such a pointless insane movie. it was great. i didnt know anything about it before i saw it the first time. someone just put it in... and DAMN! loved the ending of that one.

All of Grindhouse was amazing-
However, you NEED to see Planet Terror. It was my favorite of the two, though they're hard to compare.
I heard a rumor they're producing another Grindhouse, and one of the films is supposedly 'Machete' - one of the trailers shown in the original.

I really liked pulp fiction. It has what a lot of films lack.
Death proof was just a further pandering to Quentin Tarentino's bizarre and expensive femdom fetish of seeing women beat up and killing men.
I don't have anything against that. But Kurt Russel? Oh fuck no Mr Tarentino. You watch your fucking spineless back.

Tarantino makes sometimes entertaining cheesey films, which steal from many, many other cheesey films.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Pulp Fiction is one of the best films of the nineties, but I'd generally call emperor's new clothes on his work most of the time.

Did I just see someone in here disrespect Kurt Russell?
Quentin Tarantino is alright, not great not horrible. I find him overrated although I give him credit for generally being pretty original and inventive even if he rips off a lot of obscure films. His films are great pop corn flicks though. I respect Quentin even if he isn't one of my favorites.

Is it really that bad? I haven't seen the movie but I heard Kurt Russell was awesome in it. And forgive me I thought you were criticizing his body of work rather than his performance in this one film.

care to elaborate? what movies did he steal his ideas from?

there's a little french film, i don't recall the director, called "Man Bites Dog". i see a lot of Tarantino in it, mellow lulls with out of the blue, in your face violence. if you don't mind reading subtitles i would highly recommend it. i think it was made in the 90's.

Are you serious?
Tarantino's films are all about other movies, even he admitts it.
Okay, off the top of my head, some examples.
Reservoir Dogs borrows largely from the plot of an asian cinema film called "City on Fire".
Pulp Fiction 'references' "Bande a Part", "Psycho", "Deliverance", "Zardoz", "Kiss Me Deadly" the list goes on and on and on.
"Kill Bill" plunders most of extreme asian cinema of the past thirty years the most annoying (for me) is the wholesale borrowing of dialogue from the end scene of Miike Takashi's "Rainy Dog".
True Romance heavily riffed on Badlands.
Death Proof owes a lot to "Faster Pussy Cat Kill Kill" and other cheesey Grindhouse pictures.
Tarantino is only original in how he weaves his references (ahem, stealing) together.
Not to be too big headed but I have a first class (with hons) degree in media studies, I taught Media Studies for a couple of years and have watched a very broad span of film from different genres and countries.
I at least know what I'm talking about half the time!

I don't care if he stole ideas from other movies. They're still good movies.

I still enjoy Tarantino's films - I just think what they are has kinda got lost in the cultural reception mix.
His references are often so obscure that many might think he has an extraordinary imagination - he's basically a good collage artist who works with fragments of film history.

I did come off as abrasive. But, that's one of the things I enjoy about his movies. It encourages you to look deeper. Plus the dialogue is usually really good.

Tarentino isin't fit to lick John Carpenter's boots. Now that is a man of vision, and talented to! He's one of my favourite musicians. What else has Tarentino done? Worked in a video rental shop.
The man is full of fail. His only trick was getting loads of money from gullible people that don't know any better.

I would not say Q is "stealing" from other movies, he is paying homage to them in a respectful way. But yes, he does it deliberately with no apologies. Nothing wrong with that.

agreed, thats what i was gonna say. he just loves movies and probably loves when people catch his homages. he's a filmmaker for people who love movies.
and i don't think women in cages is a tarantino movie. i know tarantino is watching it in planet terror, but i dont even think its a real movie.
i liked death proof, but its a really slow movie. not the kind of movie to watch too often. planet terror on the other hand is such a fun movie, i love it.
