I checked the "whats grows in your area" and did not see them for the North Carolina Area
However I found a great writeup for Azurescens http://www.sporelab.com/pscyangg.htm
wow no messin with agar awesome
anyways I was thinking of getting them going , let them colonise a tub of chips and then place them in some great woodland I have with a creek.
Only thing I wonder about is Hot summer days and cold winter nights
Anyone tried them or know how they will do?
in the shade of course

Azures can take the cold, i live in WI and have been known to "find" azurescens outdoors. But if you live in the carolinas....my guess is that the hot summers might kill em...could be wrong tho, i have no expierence in the hot weather. I would try it tho, spawn it right after all the snow melts and the temp starts to rise. Be sure to keep us informed.

I'm from the Pacific Northwest, Azures and Cyans are quite populous here naturally. Their mycelium is very slow to colonize (from my observations on... ehem... certain things), prefers Alder (you can buy big bags of alder chips meant for smoking that work great) as a substrate, other deciduous, non-pine trees are suitable as well. The mycelium will flourish at temps between 50F and 75F, but will survive and possibly grow some in just about any temperature not exceeding 100F, but they're VERY picky fruiters. They'll only fruit if moisture content is high, theres a good amount of healthily colonized substrate (which like I said takes some time), and the night time temperature must be 40-50F.
I'd reccomend getting a good amount of substrate colonized, burying it about a half inch into the dirt near that creek in the shade, you should put 3-6 inches of substrate thick into lines with uncolonized stuff in between, each line being 3-4 inches wide and 8-12 inches long. That's what has been observed as the most effective setup. When you're all done lay a piece of cardboard over it until temperatures reach a suitable level for fruiting. If you don't wanna put cardboard on it for whatever reason just bury it more like an inch into the ground.

as for them prefering alder this is not true. They like alder just as much as other wood. Alder is used in the pnw because it is a weed tree and there is an abundance of it.
There are many suitable woods so you do not have to waste your time trying to find alder and paying top dollar for it. I use fir in ca and it works great also

ive done 1 but its my first and i need to wait it out .. any hardwood is good .. keep them clear of pine needly ground also as they dont like the acidic resin of it .. rows are preferable but not u must and if u do decide to go by a creek make sure it is far enough to not get flooded if there is a downpour and elevated water levels ... shade u got ... you are in a level 6/7 area for mushie growth which is the highest .. spawn soon and u can be trippin ballz by mid october ..cheers ..

I don't know about Azures but I know a bit about soil. NC soil is very acidic. You might want to investigate what ph they need. You can adjust your soil as needed with hydrated lime and a soil test kit.
This would be my guess as to why a previous poster said not to plant under pine trees, which are everywhere in NC.

the beds should sit on top of the soil. There is no need to worry about ph

Yeah I said other non-pine woods. I've tried working with pines before and it just hasn't worked for me.
