starting poppies indoors for spring planting.

I am planning a mixed poppy garden for spring. I understand poppies don't enjoy transplant, however I am accustomed to giving my seedlings a healthy indoor start under flouros before garden planting. I am wondering if sowing the poppy seed in 4" peat pots under flouros will be OK until the threat of frost has past and I can stick the whole peat pot in the garden, or I should be patient and just wait until spring and sow directly to the garden. Also, would high humidity be a problem for the seedlings if started indoors? Any help is appreciated! Knoa

Ima newb but it sounds like you have a good plan. If take the whole thing out of the pot(don't disturb the roots) it should be fine.

you can sow them directly outside, even if there's snow on the ground. sow early spring or late fall. i just sowed some at random places in my yard, they will not die with frost or cold temps..

Poppies germinate best at cooler temps (40-60f). The small seedlings are also very cold-hardy.

all I know is that they like to germinate in cold weather. Like if you wanted to plant them early, you should have planted them outside in the fall. They would have germinated and got started first thing in the spring.
Good luck because all these plants need is a root busted to die.

Our night temps. here can be as low as 25F and around 60F in the day high. I read in Wiccan's thread that the small seedlings are very sensitive to colder temps.

yea you can if you want. most species i think need a bit of a cold shock to germ. if you make like plugs with several sprouts that if you move wont disturb the roots. then jsut put that right into the ground in the spring. after a few weeks and there nice and established do yoru thinning then.
and you can also throw some seed down right outside. worst thing you wil just need to do a bit more thinning. then you have yoru bases covored

Knoa6, personally I would work the soil outside giving it some good drainage and some ferts and then broadcast sow some outside. You could still do the indoor bunch, and I've had some success transplanting poppies (but it's rather time consuming and a delicate process), but I bet they'll do nicely outside. Best thing about poppies is they have a lot of seeds.

My plan is to pick about 5 different locations.
I'm going to dig a hill, fill it with potting soil, then add the seeds.
The should spourt in spring?

if you have space and good lighting system they can be grown indoors alright. but it's really easier and cheaper to do it outdoors
