actually, grind some birdseed.... its cheaper and better I am not making this shit up, i am not quoting a 'tek', no, this comes from experience.... I know, its hard to tell these days will all the newbies running around here quoting shit they've read but never tried. you will be 1 step ahead of the PF tek, with a nutritious 'alternative' hawk substrate. wait, we'll call it ' dog-magic ' , yeah, I like that. All ground, mix equal parts: Flax seed birdseed/finch or other brown rice mix with norml pf-ratio of vermiculite. DOG-MAGIC Substrate! oh wait, how about PF++, yah. sorry.... :) got carried away

Iono,if you do decide to switch to birdseed, you MUST use a pressure cooker.Boiling won't cut it for birdseed

not 100% true. PCing birdseed is intended to kill spores buried in the seed. if he grinds it up and breaks every seed then normal boiling or waht not will work. on a side note i have boiled pint sized birdsed jars for 1.5 hours and none of the batch contaminated in a period in excess of 30 days. substrate was VERY moist and myc never grew but no contam either using whole birdseed. i do not recommend it tho. but if he grinds it up its the same as BRF. well, not EXACTLY the same but it sterilizes easier ----edit---- and also; after the 4-5 weeks of no colonization i emptied the jars into a casing and mixed it with the crumbled BRF cakes and the substrate and 50/50 casing did fully colonize in under a week.
-------------------- Holy shit people; COMMON SENSE! we were all born with it where did it go? maybe theres a tek out there to explain how to use it! BUCKETS BRIGADE left hand man!!!

So you're saying you boiled and got no contams but no mycelium either, Do you think you might have boiled for too long and lost all the nutrients?

why? einstein Why is one "GROUND" substance; e.g. FINCH SEED, Different than another "GROUND" subtance, like say "BROWN RICE" after they are both in "POWDER" form.... what I mean is, why is "GROUND BIRDSEED" more prone to mass contamination than "GROUND BROWN RICE" , after all... they are BOTH seeds before being ground. Now I DO beleive that the odds are the SAME for BOTH of these if he is boiling and not pc'ing to sterilize..... Now boxtop, make sure you read my post CAREFULLY before you reply.... IF you reply.

wow, box top, your totally wrong, even I know that and i'm a newbie. Its times like this when one should change ones Screen name, and start a new with perhaps a bit more, humble affable personality. I usally don't care about stupid people, but your just annoying, so i'm hopping on the anti-boxtop train, ALL ABOARD, next stop, your ass!

Im driving the ant-boxtop train - no offence but why would one ground substrate be more prone to contamination than others?? I have found Millet to be highly resistant to contams when compared to BRF/rye and it give bigger yields and potent cubies..
