Bay Area Mushroom Hunt
    #8005861 - 02/10/08 06:30 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

The location was in the santa cruz mountains, roughly half way between the bay area and santa cruz.

ID? It was kind of slimy, grew directly from the ground and left a white spore print.

21 awesome people showed up.

It was just about the most beautiful weather ever and we kept stopping and hanging out, as if we were all in someones living room.

On the top right are chanterelles after the water was cooked out and poured off. At least a quart of water came out of the mushrooms and they are ready to be added to the other dishes.

On the bottom the chanterelles from the above plate were dipped in beer batter (50% flour, 50% beer, salt, herbs) and fried in a mixture of peanut oil and grapeseed oil. The finished product is on the upper left.

A curry with tomatoes, broccoli and lots of chanterelles:

On the right an almost finished red curry, and on the left a sour cream chanterelle sauce with asparagus.

Hehehe! John, and Gautum(sp?), and that one guy that thought I was a cop came!! That's rad!

It looks like a lot more fun than Marin Mushroom Mania, but I was way closer, and wanted to talk to a few people and make new connects.

Oh well! Maybe next time!

Cute Hericium. I've still not found any, despite my searches.

That white mushroom might be Clitopilus, Camarophyllus, or Hygrophorus. What did you and John think??

Hehehehehe...

I was on a foray the other day, and noticed this one hippie checking out a Ganoderma.  He seemed to be facing it, leaning on it with his head down.  I decided not to disturb him.

after the foray, with the huge conk in hand, he mentioned how he had to really use all his weight and lean into it for a long time to break it off.  I was like "Hahahaha, oooooh, I thought you were just like, hanging out with the mushroom!"

No hippies were in attendance. The people who look like hippies are actually anti-hippies.

We have douglas fir and redwood mostly, also some monterey cypress near the coast.

The scene from Animal House with John Belushi on the staircase with the guitar crosses my mind.

ukulele's are ideal for those long long hunts when you sometimes need to cross the ocean in a raft with nothing to eat but coconut rines. :runaway:
