Social Darwinism?

This is an excerpt from The Oxford Companion to Philosophy on darwinism:Quote:
Since in nature genetically based variations within species arise randomly, Darwinism is a non-teleological theory of order: the variation chosen by the environment and which fit it were not designed to do so, nor did they arise in direct response to environmental pressure (contra Lamarck). The absence of teleological explanation means it cannot be applied directly to developments in human society or culture.

Social Darwinism is a stupid ideology designed to justify white supremacy. It's also worth noting that Darwin never applied his theory to human cultures, nor did he coin the term 'survival of the fittest'-- the term is a misrepresentation of the theory.

As far as I know, "design" is just a concept humans use to direct their own actions and explain those of others. If we're not involved in the equation, or at least other animals who design things (e.g. birds with their nests and beavers with their dams), the teleological perspective kind of breaks down.
Speaking of which, thanks for teaching me a new word.

Social Darwinism exists to some extent, but as a justifying factor it's bullshit. There's to many variables to definitively say one group of people is socially "less fit" than any other.
If you boil it right down, to find out what makes some groups get the shit end of the social Darwinism stick, you basically end up with the original environment of a group of people as the only factor that dictates how socially "fit" they are. The rest is just a natural progression of that starting point.
When you hear people espousing it, it usually carries undertones of racism and bigotry.
