Bacteria problems with newspaper

I have been having some problems with my newspaper projects lately. They have been getting really stinky during the first few days after inoculation. I have tried both boiling the paper and using bleach and it seems to happen in both cases. I noticed that it happens less with the bleach, but some of them will always go bad. Any ideas on how to combat this? The last project I had problems with was lions mane on boiled newspaper.

have you tried pressure cooking it? or are you trying to avoid that?
Ive seen books thrown in bags and pressure cooked
I havn't really seen much in the way of just pasterizing paper, it sounds like a contam and the best way to combat it is to cook it longer or pressure cook it, and make sure your water content is currect

It's normal for it to smell a bit. However, it shouldn't be fermenting. Many people use newspaper with no pasteurization or sterilization at all. They simply wet it and add spawn. RR

Hmmm... well maybe I was a little too swift in my assessment.

Could be too wet, or it's coming from your spawn.
Spawn's healthy?

Spawns fine... it just smells really bad. Probably too wet. I just got a huge bag of aspen pet bedding. Think I'm gonna try my luck with that. Any suggestions for how to fruit off of woodchips? I was thinking I would throw them in a bag with some WBS spawn, let colonize then cut some slits and/or take the top off.
