I know a guy who has three jars about 7 days old and two of them smell rotton. And one of those two looks milky? This can't be good. Anyone run into this before?

If it smells rotten it must not be, and when you say "milky" do you mean like milky white liquid?

I had similar problems when i did my first portabello print to syringe an did 5 jars and lost 3 and it was because i was not paying attention to sterlity when making the syringe well enough, my birdseed got wet and gross and started to rot, make sure you chuck it cause more contams will grow and if you open it you can risk airbourne contams

haha honestly i did it the same as cubes with a multispore i actually started off with porto's before I ever thought about doing cubes. I just followed the basic wbs tek and just left them alone my place is a little lower in temp then an average growers place i dunno if that helped. Haha i am quite the newb but i did use a full spore print for a syringe and it was a big print haha was before i realized you could make multi syringes per print haha. My next project is the portos again so if i figure out any tricks i will be sure to let you know

Yes milky liquid. I thought he might have had too much moisture in them and maybe the white milky substance is just watery mycelium. He did not have a pressure cooker. I believe he tried steaming them like one would do the cubes.

mycelium water is clear. Mycelium does not colonize water. it colonizes the sugar in the water. Your jars are toast

It's called wet spot and no matter what efforts I put into WBS it always fails for me.... the grains here are abit weird I guess + I'm fairly certain all WBS in this province is coated in anti-fungicides unless I were to venture hours and hours away to retrieve a few bags of the stuff from known retail chain suppliers that carry stuff ready for use like some members have mentioned.
But rye is easier, preparation and sterilization.
