I agree with you about not consuming the core or the skin. However even if you use fresh cactus, as long as you are using a filter you wont end up with anything more or less slimy than using dried cactus.

we need a double blind study. Make one brew of whole cactus and the other with just the flesh. Get two groups of people and give them a dose of one or the other. Would they be able to tell the difference?

I've worked with a LOT of dried cactus and it ALWAYS turns to snot when you add water. It's the boiling process that breaks down the cell membranes and diminishes the snot effect. Drying the cactus is a complete waste of time unless you are planning to use it in an a/b extraction or extraction via alcohol. The only other reason for drying would be for long term storage.

Certainly, that's how I had my first mescaline trip. I had ground some dried peruvian torch into power and stuffed it into capsules. I washed down something like 60 or 70 capsules while riding with a friend. We climbed to the top a grain silo with a bunch of people who lugged a case of beer up there and hung out until I started feeling the mescaline. It was fucking amazing.
I did, however, puke, and later I had some serious slimy diarrhea. All of that dried cactus swelled enormously by soaking up all of the water I had used to wash down all of those capsules. That tended to make me feel a bit bloated. I felt better after puking.
About the only thing that really sucked was that I was the only one tripping that night. Everyone else got drunk and stoned. I was left to entertain myself until someone else woke up, at which time I was still tripping.
