getting a food dehydrator and more tuppaware for a fruiting chamber is pretty much going to wipe me out money wise for a couple weeks. If I just turn on my closet light will it be enough to get them fruiting? I know its not ideal, I just want to know if it will work.

yea, a closet light will work just fine.
i dont think you need a dehydrator tho.
im not sure it will work, but im thinkin about mounting a computer fan to a rubbermaid box with a few holes in it to dry out stuff... kinda like a bud dehydrator.

word. thanks. I know I don't need a food dehydrator but it's the easiest. I plan on getting one anyway and I just wanna get it out of the way. I like your idea. Let's hear how it works.

Incandescent is the worst possible light for mushrooms. While it might 'work', you'll get much better performance and pinsets if you'll screw in a compact fluorescent instead of an incandescent light bulb. RR

ya know what, theres a light on top of my oven (just plugged in and portable) and i'm pretty sure its flourescent. its my girlfriends so i'll ask her when she gets home. its very light, and feels cheap but im pretty sure its flourescent. It's about 2 feet long like a little rectangle. If it is flourescent, even though it's lite and probably doesnt put out much watts or anything would that be better?

If it's a 'kitchen and bath' fluorescent, it probably has a color temperature of 3,000 Kelvin, just like incandescent. It will still work, but possibly not as well as 'natural daylight' fluorescent. Put it right up close to the fruiting chamber, but not inside. RR

Who the hell do you think is going to buy into that crap? That's just plain bullshit. If the government wants to tap your phone or bug your house, they'll do it. However, they don't bug fluorescent lights sold in stores to spy on people.
CFLs use a tiny fraction of the electricity an incandescent bulb uses to produce the same amount of light. If you buy a CFL for mushroom growing, look for one that says 6,500 K on the packaging. RR

My food dehydrator was free, aside from gas money to go pick it up. Check out Craigslist's "free" section and freecycle, if your neighborhood has one.

I have my greenhouses in a room that gets a lot of indirect sun light. I used to use a GE growsitck back in my closet days. It worked OK. They are not expensive. I figure it would work way better than a normal light bulb. HomeDepot should have them. There are a lot of posts on this subject do a few searchers.
