Of course it does. You are a 19 year old genius who has had the scales removed from his eyes, no doubt by a fungus, and who now SEES the light and it is the one true light of TRUTHINESS that has shown you what COULD BE if only everyone agreed with you. Of course, other people will have to go to work but you, your majesty, will be able to recline upon the COUCH OF MANY PILLOWS and think wise thoughts and blow BIG BONG HITS, for you are BRAD. WTF are you on about? I'm a working, 47 year old, Tax paying citizen who believes that things could and should be better for us. I do not believe we should be passive, lazy or complacent with our country, this is what I meant you idiot.

Life in current day America is greater than life in any other society that has ever been.  People who believe this are not ignorant, they are grateful.  If you really are 47 years old, and haven't totally fucked up your life that you need a handout, then you are a career malcontent.  I feel sorry for you that you cannot accept the overwhelming achievement that is America.

P.S.  I didn't get everything I wanted either.:bitch:

Sweet. So me and a bunch of bloodthirsty friends can put together our own mercenary unit and be subcontracted by a contractor hired by a non-government firm to go to 3rd world countries where we can buy whatever kind of guns we want and shoot at just about anyone and probably doge accountability when we "accidentally" shoot up a street market.

So these countries that are mad at us can actually be mad at citizens when we put together an upstart business based on shooting at them.

Killing has always been good business. Coupled with forgery and fraud anyone can make a killing, killing.

God bless rampant capitalism.

Once a friend and I went into a WalMart and started raising hell because we couldn't find any clothes made in the US. We talked to a manager and he was even willing to give us a 5% discount on any of the clothes we were going to buy that day... Its almost like he couldn't comprehend the principle that we wanted our money to stay in the US. Its pretty sad.

Felling compassion for what another experiences due to one's excesses is apparently not something that you are able to comprehend. This is evidenced that by how you think everyone who opposes U.S. policy is due to selfish reasons (which are the only reasons you seem to know for doing anything) instead of selfless reasons.

This is not really comprehensible English but I will make my best guess. I expect everyone to act with their own interests in mind, which interests are theirs and theirs alone to define. Guilt assuagement can be considered in their interests if they say so, as can some sense of self worth from doing "good" deeds. Altruism is not selflessness.

Quote:

If one had the choice between buying a pair of jeans for $20 made with slave labor in Asia or Latin America (a majority of the profit which goes onto the hands of the already rich, & only change into the hands of the laborers), or buying basically the same pair of jeans for $25 that were made at a local worker's cooperative from hemp that was grown locally in order to support a start-up business & business concept... is it incomprehensible to your completely greedy, 100% self-serving worldview that people exist who would pay the extra $5 (not in their immediate short-term economic interest) because they have a commitment to social, economic & environmental justice that they believe merits spending the extra $5?

Nope, it is not incomprehensible to me and I have actually indulged in paying extra for some similar reasons. Supporting local businesses and farms, other stuff. A word that you have included here, one which rarely shows up in your posts, is a tiny little word but oh so important. It is "choice." Usually you want to take that away and make everyone conform to your particular ideals regarding, well, idealism.
Quote:

It's very sad that you think American consumers who spend a little extra on 'fair trade' coffee because of their belief in justice are somehow idiots because they don't want to exploit poor farmers somewhere else in the world. If I were that self-centered, I'd probably commit suicide in a moment of clarity.

You are that self-centered. You get strokes from your sense of high dudgeon and self-perceived moral superiority. Endorphins positively flood your brain when you perform some "good, progressive" deed. But don't go there (suicide I mean), you're really not that bad of a guy.

It is very easy for you to find stores that sell American made clothing. There is also an internet. Who the fuck do you think you are to dictate to Wal-Mart or anybody else that they need to supply and buy American made products exclusively? Wal-Mart and foreign manufacturers allow poor Americans the ability to afford more than they would otherwise be able to. Why do you hate poor Americans?

So WalMart is for poor people?

You enjoy using absolutes don't you? I wasn't dictating anything to WalMart. I was a prospective customer who at that particular time had a particular reason for buying something made in a particular place. They asked me why I was so intent on buying something made in the US so I told them (maybe hotly). The next day I drove for 30 min. to get some generic coveralls made here. What bothers me about WalMart is they seem to exclusively stock foreign goods.

I figured I'd give WalMart another chance (and I do this almost twice a year) to listen to a prospective customer and make some changes to gain my business. Unsatisfied, I took my business elsewhere. Am I not a good capitalist?

WalMart allows poor people to purchase things they would not otherwise be able to afford. This is largely due to their reliance on cheap foreign suppliers for their goods. Duh.

That's fine. Except for your ridiculous sense that they should be carrying something just because you want it.

Nope. Its just a means that happens to work for certain people. I guess you should quit trying to smoke it then... Or actually try it. In the very least it might entertain you for a little bit, giving us here at the Shroomery a break from your seemingly constant shit-stirring.

who the hell cares if products are made in places other than the U.S.? I am so sick of this globalization/free trade bullshit. Look up the Asian Tigers. They are countries that have raised their standard of living tremendously due to globalization and outsourcing. The "slave labor" that you talk about is obviously better than most of the other jobs available in those countries. You can't hold those jobs to the standards here in the U.S.
On top of that, globalization has been a huge stabilizing force in the economy.

I do. Maybe its just because I'm so counter-culture . I don't know. I just don't like the fact that we rely too much on other countries. I strive to be as self-sufficient as I can.

Damn, this thread has gone a long way in a different direction.

But relying on other countries is not a bad thing. It has helped keep the economy steady, and allowed us to shift our focus on high technology, and other more profitable sectors, while also helping developing countries (the Asian Tigers) become developed nations, with a higher standard of living.
In many cases globalization has a negative effect on other countries but it is usually because of the foreign countries own bureaucracy which screws over its people.
