Is there a reason Wild Bird Seed Substrate is so popular?
    #8003618 - 02/10/08 03:38 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

...in the 'Grain Spawn & Substrate' section of the Mushroom Cultivation (pantpant) Section of this site??

I have never used WBS as straight substrate but it makes for a great spwan material... I think it is so popular because it is very forgiving as far as moisture content... There are a variety of grains in WBS that hydrate at different rates and some of them will continue to absorb moisture after you PC if you have too much water but they take on enough water during the soaking process to not dry out the other grains... There is also a variety of nutrients in WBS due to the different grains that you can't get from a grain such as rye by itself...

It's cheap, but inferior to rye berries.

I always thought WBS made way too much of a mess. Now I'm into rye berries and just find them easier to work with.

Really? Weird, I think it's the other way around
When I work with rye berries, they get very sticky or slimy.
So do WBS but but not as much as rye.
I think it's also better to fill into jars, since rye berries are quiet big, so there's much air between them...

rye is better but more effort is needed to sterilize it.

CHEAP AND AVAILABLE AT ANYPET STORE.
small kernel size = more inoculation points when spawning and also a combination of grains is nice

WBS grains are smaller than rye. So, WBS is better for G2G work (Why? Cause smaller grains mean you is spread more wbs grains over more space with a mere spoon-full than you would with rye or say... corn. This means your G2G jars will colonize faster with a spoonfull of wbs! Think about it.).

But, if you wish to case, use rye... it IS better. It holds more water, and grows better flushes. Why? I have no fuckin' clue... ask RogerRabbit, he's the expert!
