I went to home-depot and bought what was called 'salvia assorted' it didnt say any specific names and I dont think its right. The leaves look like this

Ive had salvia leaves before and this isnt really what they looked like. I have some leaves drying out now and I was just going to smoke some and see if I felt anything. Is this safe, due to the chemicals and things that home depot might have put into the soil? The flowers on the plant are red also.

a salvia plant from home depot will be a perennial flower, not salvia divinorum which is what you're looking for
you'd have to buy one off the internet...or a herbal shop that sells live cuttings
better luck next time

You've got sage.
You probably were thinking of Salvia divinorum, which is morphologically more of a mint than a sage.

that's some sort of ornamental salvia. all salvias are in the mint family, there's hundreds of salvia species and many other genuses in the mint family other than salvia. so salvia divinorum is actually a sage in the mint family. culinary sage(salvia officianalis) is also in the mint family. you cannot hybridize plants from a different genus but you can from different species in the same genus. salvia divinorum is thought to be a hybrid of some unknown mexican salvia species made by the mazatecs long ago. salvia means sage in latin, not mint. it is a mint though, as much as culinary sage is and that one you bought. i hope the botany isn't too confusing.

I've made that same mistake a few years back when I first heard of salvia. I was dissapointed, but the hunting process was in itself enjoyable. You didnt get divinorum, but take care of her anyway, shes an attractive plant

not a psychoactive variant of the salvia types you have to deliberatedly find the salvia divinorum plant and then learn how to care for it. growing it is almost as confusing as smoking it. in some ways it is utterly fragile and in others so hardy you will freak. once it is established in a new room you can ignore it - just watering weekly. until it acclimates, you might live on edge, really weird. good luck.
