What does illness teach us?
    #8001716 - 02/09/08 06:36 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Seems my sedentary lifestyle coupled with my high sugar, high salt, high fat diet has failed me. :mad2:

I am *gak* laid up with a *cough* *cough* nasty flu.

How might I best use this period of time to learn about myself and the nature of reality? *achoo!*

When I'm sick, I like to ponder the workings of my immune system, as well as the invisible (to us) relationship we have with bacteria, viruses, microbes, etc...which we only notice when it "goes wrong."

We are not alone!

Learn what it really means to STOP! Being really acutely sick can be an eyeopener.

I have started to name the microbes and am trying to not use numbers as that is too impersonal. Maybe if they get to know and like me...

The times I have been really sick with flu I would really have to stop and just be there. Often I found it more peaceful then being well. Especially when you try to sweat it out and get a little bit delirious.

The pneumonia I got last spring was a real eye opener for me as well. I spent 3 days in the hospital on IV moxifloxicin. It was the sickest I've ever been, but it was also a really good experience to go through because it forced me to realize how weak my immune system really can get when I neglect to eat well, and to eat enough. It also made me realize that my house probably was moldy, as I had suspected, and furthered my resolve to move. This winter I've only gotten sic twice and both have been really mild compared to the last few years... I'm learning!

TY, I think... Would 'sick tea' make me better or worse?

I once had a temp of 105 degrees for days. Talk about a fried brain, I was majorly delusional (which explains alot about my current mind state).

Illness teaches us we are not the supermen/women we think we are.  Made to feel like shit by something we can't even see.

Hope you get better soon!  I'll leave the soup when I come to fulfill the challenge and look around your place.

TY.

A reflective note: Just because my body feels like shit doesn't mean my mood has to change. No need to be testy or grumpy. I can still joke, laugh, and smile.

Anyone who disagrees with this, I will tear his friggin' heart out.
