Has anyone read this book by Andrew Weil? I am reading it now and love it!

Yes I have. It was one of the first books i've read on drugs. The book really doesn't produce any new info on the topic. Just kinda refer's to other peoples work. I think Andrew Weil now writes health food cook books. I wonder if his beliefs on drugs still remain.

Andy wrote a great biik in the whys and wherefores of why people are interested in altering their consdicousness.

I should mention his book Marriage of the Sun And the Moon is the best one yet on drugs. I found it ironic. Andrew weil was responsible for getting Timothy Leary Fired from harvard in the early 1960s and then he went and did everything that Tim did and more so and got paid for it on top of that.

You can also find some good writings by Andy in the Journal of Altered States of Consciousness, available in most University library stacks

Why did he do this?

I was working at the returns desk at some book warehouse back in 73.......I remember that came back to us by mistake(the company where I was working wasn't the actual [publisher of the book).....it was definitely an interesting read, B4 Weil became sort of a new age icon/guru. His first book I do believe

ummmmm, i think dr weil was a pre-med undergrad at harvard, & worked for the student newspaper... he wrote an article on leary's psychedelic research projects that got the attention of the university bigwigs... (psych department guidlines required only graduate student volunteers, not undergrads...) i heard that tim turned andy down for inclusion in his psiliocybin projects, but told him that with university letterhead & a nicely phrased rerquest to a chemical supply company, the undergrads could cop an ounce of mescaline for their own experiments (which weil & friends quickly did ...)
(other folks involved in the harvard psychedelic project wanted a more quiet approach, by leary was nothing if not flamboyant (ummmm, not to mention iconoclastic... in his book _understanding understanding_ humphrey osmund talks about meeting leary, and mentions that a person with leary's personality type really doesn't need to do psychedelics to open them up to new possibilities, they're already open ....)
weil also co-authored (w/winnie rosen) the very useful drug primer _from chocolate to morphine_
