(HealthDay News) -- The effects of withdrawal from marijuana use can be as bad as what people experience when they stop smoking cigarettes, including irritability, anger and trouble sleeping, a new study says.
"These results indicate that some marijuana users experience withdrawal effects when they try to quit, and that these effects should be considered by clinicians treating people with problems related to heavy marijuana use," lead investigator Ryan Vandrey, of the department of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, said in a prepared statement.
This study included six men and six women (median age 28.2) who used marijuana at least 25 days a month and smoked at least 10 tobacco cigarettes a day. For the first week, they continued their normal use of both substances. For the remaining five weeks of the study, they were randomly chosen to refrain from using either cigarettes, marijuana or both substances for five-day periods, separated by nine-day periods of normal use. Urine tests were used to monitor abstinence.
The participants used a withdrawal symptom checklist to self-report levels of aggression, anger, appetite change, depressed mood, irritability, anxiety/nervousness/restlessness, sleep difficulty, strange dreams and other symptoms. They also gave an overall score for the discomfort they experienced during each abstinence period.
Overall withdrawal severity associated with marijuana alone and tobacco alone was similar in frequency and intensity. Marijuana abstinence seemed to produce more pronounced sleep disturbance, while general mood effects (such as anxiety and anger) were more pronounced during tobacco abstinence.
This was a small study, but the findings are consistent with previous research indicating that marijuana withdrawal effects are clinically important, Vandrey said.
The study was published in the January issue of the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

That says nothing about how hard it is to quit, all it says is that smoke people who smoke a lot of pot experience some sleep disturbences when they stop.

Total bullshit. I smoke six months out of the year, every year, and take the other six months off. The only effect is craving for about a week to ten days. I know cig smokers who know it's killing them, but every time they 'quit', they're right back smoking in a few weeks or less. There's all sorts of disinformation the do-gooders put out. They must be saying that crap to get a government grant or something. RR

I'm still confused because the article doesn't state anything about marijuana being hard to quit, it doesn't even say that tobacco is hard to quit it just listed one withdrawal system.

well of course they are going to have a hard time stopping marijuana when they are also smoking the addicting cigarettes? what kind of study is this?
if they wanted to see how hard it was to quit smoking weed, why would they have them smoke cigs too?

Oh well, it's a conclusive study then.

has anyone noticed that these studies that attempt to prove how addictive pot is always has the participants smoking tobacco as well?
This study doesn't make any sense, if you wanted to know how hard it is to quit pot you'd want to isolate pot and make sure it was the only thing affecting the person, not throw random substances as well.

The people in this study probably experienced the cigarette withdrawal so strongly that the marijuana withdrawal was completely overshadowed. This study is ridiculous cause you can't associate any symptom with one or the other, and it's all obviously connected to the cigarettes.

I had no trouble at all quitting cigarettes just over a year ago (after 5+ years), but I haven't been able to go more than a day without severe cravings for reefer...I haven't been able to quit for more than a week in almost 4 years.

Apparently, it's a varying factor from person-to-person.
Some people can give it up in one swift try, while others just can't kick it.
Nonetheless, this article is bull.

That study is a joke. Even my small university psych department would laugh at the idea of a study with twelve participants and self-assessment tests.
And once again, more people are having problems distinguishing between chemical addiction, and a mentally developed dependency.
