What's GNB? Make sure the server is set to newsgroups.bellsouth.net, the port is 119, and it's set to use your e-mail address and password to login (i.e. not anonymous). With that said, most ISPs have poor retention and/or restrictive transfer limits, so if you're looking to download binaries you'll want something like Giganews.

yup, sure is. thats why you should be using another service, like usenetserver.com or giganews.com

i use usenetserver.com.
$15 a month. SSL encrypted. unlimited downloads at speeds around 1000 KB/s. has a search engine and nzb creator on the site.
giganews seems like a good service too, but it's more expensive.

I have questions about usenet. I have tried it yesterday, and it confused me very much. Im not very smart, but I should be able to get this.
I signed up for a trial period of usenet yesterday. I followed their help guide and downloaded "NewsRover". I clicked on news-west.usenet.com, and then clicked "subscribe/unsubscribe newsgroups". I clicked on names like alt.binaries.music and alt.binaries.startrek for example.
How do I know if these are actual media files, or if they are just messages? When I click on one of the messages, it appears to be just a message and not part of a media file.
My true goal with usenet is to get some software. Specifically, math/science software and operating systems. Is there an alt.binaries.xxx that I should seek out that will have these?
Thx for any adivce/tips you have!

they are soo many newsgroups, and dealing with all of those posts is really annoying - a movie can be split up into 50 or more posts.. the best way, if the usenet client you are using doesn't have a search function, is to find a site that has NZB's.
NZB's are just lists of the files you need to download for that particular thing that you wanna download.
I use newzbin, which I believe is closed registration at this point.
http://nzbmatrix.com/index.php
that site looks ok, you need to register, but def. look for NZB's. They reallly take the complexity out of looking for shit on usenet

like stated, use a site like binsearch.info or newzleech.com to search for files and generate an NZB (think of an NZB file as a playlist... but instead of mp3s, its parts of a file).

check out this post

it all worked great for me, got on newzbin (yes, it is invite only right now) and it is really easy if you get the programs listed in that post.
you may want to try binsearch.info like kotik suggested, I haven't checked it yet, but as far as clients...check the post

Detailed step by step guide to setting up your NNTP client on BellSouth / ATT free servers (free for their DSL subscribers):
