Advice needed: Sport print vs. LC

Hey guys, just to give a bit of some backstory: Ive tried succesfully a few times with the PF tek and very low rate of contams. I dont have a pressure cooker and probably wont get one anytime soon. I have a couple of jars knocked up from spores that are 1 1/2 years old and they are doing quite well, but the syringes are spent, im a cheap bastard and want to continue with my hobby. Now from what Ive gathered from the forums there are some really simple ways of doing LC's that dont require a PC at all. oh yeah the guys growing are PE so their caps are really weird and ive never taken a spore print from em.
I guess my question is, are LC's just as easy to do as spore prints or easier?

Liquid cultures are fairly simple but they can contaminate far to easy for my liking, lots of others swear by them.
Your 1 1/2 year old jars are garbage, mycelium even when refrigerated is only good for up to six months unless it's in a suspended water solution, i.e LC but you have to inject sterile air into every seven days or so to assure its survival.
PE are notorious for being very poor spore depositors, that's why they're so hard to come by.
If you have a trust worthy glove box, I'd say just print as many caps as you can on foil, misting the foil with peroxide prior to placing the cap on, this insures a 100% sterile print since any forge in spores on the underlining gills will drop with the initial cube spores.
I do not recommend this if you are new to this hobby.

Ahhh I should have clarified, only the spores were 1.5 years old, the cakes that were knocked up are almost done colonizing so Im certain they will fruit*crosses his fingers*
thanks for the advice, i might just have to bite the bullet and order more syringes then.

I would recommend against making LC by the current(but thankfully now fading) fad of squirting spore solution into sugar water. For every one that works, three or four don't, and you've wasted all that time. Simply inject spores into your cakes, and if you want more product, spawn the cakes to manure or straw. Make prints from your next harvest, and you can easily make your own spore syringes, re-using your old syringes by boiling them in water for an hour to sterilize. RR

i think lc are good if ur planning on knocking up a bunch of jars, but on the other hand of things you could go with grain to grain method. its ur choice of what you do. just make sure that if you go with either your very clean about ur methods. i would suggest using it up a lc as quick as possible and if you continue to use it then make sure you make a magnetic stirrer. have it set on low and on a timer. hae it kick on 3 times a day works wonders for me. i know a guy that keeps his running but he's able to control the temp of his plate.

I have had very little success with sugar based LC, and lots of success making my own spore syringes. YMMV.

This might be a dumb question. Has anyone ever used or put colonized grain, or bits of mycelium INTO the LC jar? i have a bunch of grain to grains to do, and was going to see if putting a few bits into a LC jar would colonize a LC made with honey. Any input?

It is often done. And it is a good method too. However the most optimal thing to do is use that colonized grain and put it on agar to isolate strong strains...

Why not just inject 10-12 ml/cc into a colonized grain jar, shake it a little bit, then withdraw the fluid via syringe and wah-lah, you have a liquid culture syringe of mycelia which in turn can be used as is to inoculate jars or use it to inoculate an LC.
Quick LC method = Take a quart jar, fill it up with 600-700 ml of water(3/4 full), add 2-3 tablespoons of 'light karo corn syrup' and mix it well. Then pour this liquid into smaller jars that you choose to use as a LC container and microwave for 20 minutes on high setting. You may want to do 5 minutes, then stop, five more minutes, then stop, untill you have reached 20 minutes at high, then wait for it to cool down then inject 1cc of spores or LC into it and let it set-you now have a viable LC!
An LC prepared correctly will last for months in the fridge and it will shave off at least two weeks of grow time. I PC my LC's @ 15psi for 20 minutes. One drop from an LC is enough inoculant to inoculate an infinite number of jars.

Not if you do your LC jars just like your grain jars(ie,Tyvek/Polyfill) they will last for months and months. I have never had to add air to my LC's. HybridprX said:

Yes, they are easy,No, they don't contam easy(if done properly)and I am one of those who swear by them.
Just my two pennies
