Grey- whitish bottoms of cake! Help
    #7999233 - 02/09/08 06:38 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Hello!
I have put one of my cakes, that was colonising for about 2.5 months, cause i/my friend heated the cakes to much probably.Between the cakes and the radiator was just an inch thick wooden board and bottom side of the box they were in.Could the heat stoped the growth of mycelium for so long?So the cakes shrinked. But what frigtened me is that bottom wasnt fully colonised when i took it to the poor mans terrarium at the beginning of this week.Somewhere about in the middle of bottom it looks like-1)like white-greyish mold/bacteria or 2)not yet strong enough mycelium, that stoped growing because the dehidration of substrate,right?-because on the light it looks like more white than grey, and i didnt smell nothing else but mushroomy smell when i birth it.I tried to scratch it of yesterday and some went of (the brownish area).Somewhere i read that high temperature makes mycelium fuzzy or fluffy or cotton like, like on my cake. Is that true? But im not sure about all, cause today when i got up i had pain in my chest for about 5-10 minutes, afterwards i was/still am ok, but i smoke cigarettes too so i dont know nothing anymore...??? I should toss it imediately, right? Here is a picture of the cake. Is it contaminated or what? Im little bit scared cause i have been faning the cake through the room from tuesday!! Please help, if anyone knows whats going on(RR?). Thanks a lot in advance!

I don't even know where to begin! If all you're losing is one cake. Toss it! Read a lot more and then do some more reading. So let me get this right... You think that your cake is contaminated, yet you have been fanning the cake through the room since tuesday!!!! That my friend is crazy. I hope you live on your own and you're not putting anyone else in harms way by exposing them to the possible billions of mold spores you've been fanning all over the room and possibly the entire house. I'm sorry my friend, but at this point I'm a bit speechless.

Colonize jars at room temperature. Heat like that on the bottom will dry out the substrate and kill the spawn. Thus, you have uncolonized material waiting for contaminants.

A properly made cake or grain jar will fully colonize in two to three weeks at normal room temp. Toss out the contaminated stuff and try again. Live and learn.
