late pass please... osx on a pc? this is the tits!
    #7998341 - 02/08/08 10:17 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I recently built a new computer for Vista. Essentially, I was hoping to run next-gen games, hd video, and high def audio. The complete system along with a legit (yep!) copy of Vista Home, cost just under $1200 (newegg.com). Everything was running perfect so then i installed XP, and that ran perfectly.

I really had no intention of doing what I'm about to:

about 2 weeks ago, I just found a link on digg.com about "hackintosh leopard running perfectly, 100%!!!" I was intrigued, and bored, so I clicked. Turns out, it was a very complete tutorial on how to install OSX on an intel PC - and by coincidence he had the same exact motherboard and CPU as me. i figured, what the hell.

Long story short not as long, I'm now up and running Leopard 10.5.1 on my pc, that cost less than $1200, and will match the performance just about any mac you put in front of it that cost up to 3x as much.

I think this is truly the end to the mac vs pc debate.

It's also running final cut studio 2, the entire adobe cs3 suite, logic 8, everything. Video drivers for my 8800gts 512Mb card are recognized, internet works (fast), *almost everything works. It took over a week of hacking away to get it this far, but it is literally a Mac. or rather, a Hac. or whatever.

*almost everything works... only problems I have run into:
- can only get stereo audio from the onboard sound (no surround sound)
- sleep function does not work(this is due to my video card apparently)

that's it! all other issues I have come across were issues with Leopard, not with running a Hackintosh - because again, Macs are now running on Intel CPUs, so other than the very very very small difference of BIOS vs EFI booting (which is only really important to the super techies) a Mac machine and a PC machine are identical.

You are simply paying for a brand name, and AppleCare. And that's completely fine too, because lots of people are extremely pleased with their hardware/software combos.

Search for osx86 forums on google.  Insanelymac and osx86project are a good place to start.

> - can only get stereo audio from the onboard sound (no surround sound)

Have you checked for a patch or is this after you have patched?

> - sleep function does not work(this is due to my video card apparently)

A common problem.

yup, insanelymac forums are where I got all of my help from.  search google for "KALYWAY_LEOPARD_10.5.1_intel_SSE2_and_SSE3"  There's a popular torrent on ThePirateBay with that exact name.  It's the one I used.

thats after using a few patches.  at first there was no audio.. then after hacking around I got only the left channel... then finally found the right patch and have stereo out only.

What is your setup? I ask, as I am working on spec'ing a machine for what you have already done and prefer not to reinvent the wheel. I'm currently looking at the Abit IP35 Pro motherboard, using it's integrated audio, and an eVGA 8800 GTS/320 video card.

seriously reconsider getting that 8800GTS 320. It's the old chipset, and only has 32 pipelines on the gpu. The 8800GTS 512 is the newer g92 chipset, and has 128 pipelines on the GPU. That's a pretty extreme difference. of course, unless you intend to do some serious next-gen 3d gaming, don't even get the 8800 series. If you do want games, the 8800GTS 512 is hard to beat for the price... although the regular 8800GT 512 is good too, and I think $100 less. It's just louder and runs hotter.

I haven't heard anything about the abit, but here are my specs:

q6600 @ 2.4
2 GB RAM
Gigabyte P35-DS3L (the p35 DS3x series are supposed to be great for osx86) the only other MoBos that are supposed to be good are the BadAxe2 from Intel (the best apparently) and the new asus boards.
8800GTS 512
2x500gb samsung 7200rpm sata (1 drive for xp/vista, 1 for scratch)
1x250gb western digital 7200rpm sata (a drive just for osx)
1xDVD-RW sata

and that's pretty much it. the important things for this are the motherboard/cpu combo, and having sata drives.

yes, there are tutorials for that as well on the insanelymac forums... although the entire point of this is to not emulate the osx, but rather run it "natively."
