How does one soak a monotub?

I searched for the answer and only came up with one method which relies on the ability to lift a rather large 3'x 2' cake out of the tub without it breaking. Right.
Ive also considered just pouring water into it and setting something on top to keep it submerged, but the problem i keep coming to is how does one remove the water without destroying the cake? Turning the container on its side would seem the only option but the physics playing out in my mind keep telling me that setting a cake on its side would break it.

Remove any filters from the tub, if you have any, then put your mono in a bath tub and let the water lightly flow over it for a few hours. Put something on the substrate to keep it from floating while its soaking. When its done soaking, put another tub inside your mono and turn the whole thing up side down then lift off the tub you were using to fruit/soak in. Your substrate will be on top of the second tub so it can dry a little before you put it back in the fruiting tub. Shouldn't break that way.

use whatever method you want to hydrate it for a couple hours. i put a couple 10lb weights on it and then let a hose slowly fill up a big bowl and run over onto the sub and out the filter holes.
after its been hydrated 2-3 hrs i use the plastic bag its sitting in to pull it out and set on one of these (need 2 of them, 3$ a piece at wal-marx)

you'll need 2 people but you use the other one to set on top and sandwich it and flip it over. then remove the bag and flip it back over and let it drain for 4-6 hrs.
then putting it back in do the same thing to get a bag back underneath it. use the bag to put it back into the monotub and tape the bag to the sides of the mono. its fool proof and works great. you'll NEVER bust your sub this way. there is no better way of rehydrating a mono IMO

You should be able to stand the tub on one end to let the water drain out without flipping it all the way upside down. If the substrate breaks in half, it's not the end of the world anyway, but try to keep it from breaking if possible. RR

Good idea actually. I was thinking of something similar by using a piece of plastic a little bit smaller than the cake itself and holding it against it with one hand while i tip over the container with the other, but with your method i would be able to flip the entire thing over and it would be completely supported. Thanks.

I agree with RR here. No special tools needed. Take out the poly-fil, fill with water (may want to do it in tub if the holes cause leakage), sink the substrate or not (preference) with weights of some kind, if you're dunking for a long time have water drip into the tub to prevent bacteria taking hold, and simply pour out later by tipping the whole thing over, and use the holes to pour the water out or tip it over completely, and use your hand to prevent the substrate from falling out. If you do this carefully it's very easy to not break the substrate, and it's not like you have fruits to worry about as this is between flushes. I have broken one before though, and both pieces continued to grow fruits.

Every time I try to flip mine out completely they bust in half, I don't think it has much to do with unhealthy colonization as the extra weight brings it down without support. I like the idea of using the bottom of an identical bin to flip it onto though, might have to try that. Generally I just fill the tub until it starts to float, leave it for a day and then tip it to drain as much as possible back out.

You take a lid peice and cut it smaller than the area of your tub- use that to hold your sub up into the mono as you tilt it to drain , pushing up against the bottom of the tub, holding the sub sturdy.
