Dreamachine

Stop me if you've all seen this before (I searched and no hits came up), but has anyone had any (sober) luck with this online dreamachine?
I've tried looking at it in pitch black rooms on several displays, but all laptop LCDs. Perhaps the refresh rate of the laptop isn't adequate?
I don't know, thought I'd share. I've had no luck (just "looks" like a bunch of flashing to me), but maybe I'm just not equipped with the right stuff or the effect is more subtle than the literature leads me to believe.
[Similarly, anyone tried building/using an actual physical dreamachine? I'd be interested to hear how it worked or differed.]
Cheers!

I don't know about that, but flash pulses of around 4 times per second should be able to induce delta waves in the brain.

My brother had a little gizmo which had headphones and opaque sunglasses, which were both attached to the controller. On the inside of the glasses, right in front of your eyes, there are 4 LED lights on each side, and you can decide whether to make them red or green and you can controller the rate of flashing. There are different sounds that it produces, I can't remember what they were like...
But I remember this device really gave me some fucked up experiences going to bed sometimes. Kept me conscious while my body was falling asleep... that's when the vibrations start.
From there it's all a blur.

Sounds like you're describing the onset of an out-of-body experience. I would explore this further, if I were you.

Fuck yeah, I was! That genius little device is a good aid in meditation.
The only times I've actually consciously experienced OBEs were unintentional... so I was quite taken aback. That's not to say I wasn't trying for years (as of late, life has distracted me from my spiritual side. I need a reawakening or something) during the time that I had these experiences.
I couldn't really handle it well enough to keep it going... all the times, it seemed like I exited my body and my awareness of my surroundings was like perceiving everything all at once, like having eyes all the way around my head. Very disorienting... too much energy for a newb to handle. It's like you're reveling in the infinite body of pure abstract energy that your physical body creates, and has used to meld the consciousness that you are using to experience detachment in the first place. Hmm... that makes me think.
I think it takes a long, long time of exposure to be accustomed to such a high state of consciousness. Perhaps our use of entheogens is one way of preparation for the pure, unadulterated detached experience.

So that makes me wonder if something like LSD would help induce this OBE state, or at least, make it easier for one to go into OBE?

That definitely started to do... something for me. At first I was having pretty intense CEVs... full three-dimensional scenes. Then I felt like I was starting to have an OBE, but it slipped away. After that, I just had a few mild CEVs.
Very interesting.

I definitely think so, just from personal experience. I know it's a lot easier to fall into a trance on psychedelics... in fact it happens all the time to me unintentionally, usually during the peak. It's like you're guaranteed a mind-expanding OBE decorated with foreign tryptamine designs when you take an entheogen and sit down in the dark, but when you're going into it sober, it takes a bit more "work."
Even weed can be used to facilitate it. I remember one time when I was like 15, I got caught with weed... I was on the computer and I left my weed and pipe on my coffee table accidentally. My dad walked in after he got home from work and from that moment I was in some shit. After he and my mom bitched me out a little bit, I was alone in my room and stoned as hell. The weed I had gotten, THAT FUCKING DAY BUT NO LONGER HAD, was pretty fucking good. I was sitting in my chair totally relaxed, almost falling asleep, when suddenly I felt just straight up intense vibrations going throughout my body and my awareness began to rise above my body.
It's fucking hard to explain just how it feels.

Interesting. I wish I had a bowl to smoke and then give this a try
I think I may do so anyways, just gotta find some cool trance or something to put on with it.
Thanks for the link!

I'm glad to see some people have gotten something out of this, though that only frustrates me more that I haven't.
Maybe when I'm next able to get my hands on some green (scarce in these here parts) I'll give the epilepsy machine another go.

So I just smoked some kief I apparently had (sweet, not expected!) and thought of this old drumming track I have. It's just a constant drum beat, and looking at the CD insert it says its 4-beats per second. I dunno, that sounds a little high to me for the track...but anyways, does anybody know what 4 beats per second translates into hertz?
I'm gonna try to upload the track somewhere here, it would be cool to match up the frequency of the flashes to the frequency of the drum beat. I've had some interesting experiences with just the drums, I'm really looking forward to this.

That's not the exact one he had, but the same thing. The sounds it made really mess with your brain.. not to mention the lights. It really gets you into a rhythm. Here's an interesting excerpt from http://itotd.com/articles/336/binaural-beats/:
"If you were to listen to two musical instruments playing the same note, but slightly out of tune with each other, you may perceive a sort of warbling or vibrato effect. These cyclic pulsations are called beats, and within a small range of tunings, they get faster the farther apart the two notes are. (If the instruments are perfectly in tune, the effect is absent, and if they’re really far out of tune, then you simply hear two different notes.) It turns out that you can get exactly the same effect if you play a tone in one ear and a very slightly lower- or higher-pitched tone in the other ear. Listen to either sound individually, and it sounds normal—but listen to both together and you perceive the beats. In other words, this effect is not an acoustic one, but is produced by the brain.
The human auditory apparatus can hear sounds with a pitch as low as about 20Hz (Hertz = cycles per second), give or take a few Hertz. However, the frequency of brainwaves—particularly those associated with states of relaxation and sleep—can go much lower, even below 1Hz. So a recording of a sound at, say, 4Hz would be inaudible and would have no effect. However, if you pitch two sounds exactly 4Hz apart (say, one at 100Hz and the other at 104Hz) and play one in each ear, the brain “manufactures” a 4Hz beat. And, all things being equal, the brain will then strongly tend to fall into sync with that frequency, producing the same sort of subjective sensation as sleep. Conveniently, the range of frequency differences that can produce an audible beat corresponds roughly to the range of frequencies dominant in the brain during the sorts of relaxed states most of us enjoy."
I didn't get to use it as much as I would've liked- that shit ain't cheap. And my brother knew I'm prone to breaking things.
For those interested in making the investment, though - I high recommend it.
