I tried to look on here and on the net but i couldnt find much - most links were broken
Cheers!

Yeah what he said. Cacti are usually very easy from seed.
Here's what I usually do for trich seedlings: I make a mix of 50% potting soil, 25% sand, and 25% perlite. Put it in a pot and wet it down good. Then sprinkle a fine layer of sand on top, this levels out the surface of the soil and keep seeds from falling down cracks and not germinating. Then sprinkle the seeds out evenly on the surface, then sprinkle a very fine layer of sand on top of the seeds just barely covering them. I find this helps them root better and not fall over, also helps keep them in contact with moisture to encourage sprouting and keeps out gnats. Then a gentle but thorough misting to ensure the surface is nice and wet and cover it with saran wrap and a rubber band. Put underneath a light or somewhere that is warm and receives bright light. The saran wrap can stay on for months, this helps keep in the moisture, seedlings do not like dry conditions. Seedlings turn red when they're receiving too much light.
It's very easy. This advice can be used for most cacti seeds.

only tip I would add would be to plug some cotton in the bottom of the pots that you are using to germinate your seeds, then place your pots in a tray with some water. This is called bottom feeding and helps promote root growth.

Yeah, if you need to water them, bottom watering is definetely better and easier until they get some size.

Sweet, cheers guys.
I collected some river sand that has heaps of dirt and nutrients in it. Reckon that would be good terra firma for the young cacti?

I've never understood the need for sterilization. I mean, you're not trying to grow the seeds on bread or something that is just itching to grow mold. A free draining mix isn't gonna mold, especially with a top layer of sand. At least it never has for me.
Or are you talking about possible bugs and/or foreign seeds? I'd just go along with it anyways.
River sand sounds ok.

i've started many trays without sterilizing and most didn't get mold or algae, the last tray i did sterilize to prevent it from happening, not necessary but better than risking something worse could happen,

I thought I read that one could have worse problems with sterilized soil as both "good" and "bad" organisms are destroyed. Which makes sense to me as microflora return to the soil it might become unbalanced by unhealthy blooms of bacteria?
