can you define it in your own words?

Tripping is the experience that follows the ingestion of a psychedelic drug, usually characterized by novel mental experiences and sensory hallucinations.

i've tripped many times, i'd like to know what's going on up there from other people's perspectives. Tripping is such an odd word since to trip in real life to is to actually trip over something.
seeing if anyone can put some sense into the word as it's known "tripping"

I describe tripping as flubbing the hookigans.

I like to describe it using this comparison. Imagine your mind as a universe. Your conscious mind is inside a house and all it knows is this house. It gets cable tv and radio, but it really hasn't been out of the house. The world around that house is your subconscious and the universe is the collective unconscious of the human experience....
Tripping is like being out of the house. The deeper into a trip you go, the further from the house you are. When you come back to the house you have gained unnumberable insights and unbounded wisdom and knowledge about yourself. Lost of it will fade and be lost, but you will still always have the trip.
I like to call it "being out of the house" for that reason.

I think what he was looking for was YOUR individual definition. How you would personally define it or best describe it using conventional terms within reality.

who knows.
it could come from people speaking of the experience like a journey, so you get "trip"
or it could be that the active compounds are tryptamines.
could have come from alot of things.

I use this same comparison...except i always said your mind was like a box, not a house.
Ingesting these chemicals, especially shrooms, makes the walls of your box fall away, allowing you to roam freely outside the box. And the space outside is infinite. Your mind is so vast, yet we never see it for what it is in normal day to day living.
Everything that consists of "your life" is executed inside your box. When the walls of your box are gone, you realize.."wow, i've been inside a box my whole life!" But without knowing anything other then your box, you would never know that anything lay beyond those walls, or that there were even walls there. For all you knew, that was as big as your mind was, lol.
I think the term "trip" refers to the travel. The trip you take to some other realm of consciousness. To take a trip to an altered state of mind. The act of taking this trip...TRIPPING.

That's probably the best definition of tripping, I think.

All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter." --Max Planck
