Would men have wiped out women (or vice versa) long ago?

If sexual reproduction never existed, the first people on earth would have also been the last, and I suspect that for other reasons than killing each other. Unless you somehow think that people would have just showed up in here through the fairy portal.

I don't think there would be any men left to wipe out anything at all.

And when did we invent those? We go way back, and other methods of reproduction were invented only a few decades ago. What do you do with the time gap?

women would *probably* have put men in check, but not wiped them out. this is how many asexually reproducing insects work.
but hey, most girls still like to get fucked, so they'd keep some of us around

How could the different sexes even evolve if there was no sexual reproduction? We would all be the same sex if that were the case.

Ok, I get it.
If we no longer needed sexual reproduction to procreate now (which may happen), then no, I dont think one sex would kill the other.
Having both men and women in a society is useful and any society with only one sex would lose out.

Why if we did not need two sexes for reproduction, would a one sex species lose out?

Personally I'd keep the men around.
They are so handy! Who else would work on my car and move the furniture?
And speaking from experience most men would starve if there weren't any women around. So I think the women would fare better without men than the men would without the women.
I could always keep the furniture where it is.
Besides, I get along better with men than women. I would go crazy if it was all just women. There's too many brainless twits around.

Good question. I usually tend to think that diversity increases the quality and survivability of a species. Be it genetic diversity, cultural diversity, or in this case, sexual diversity.

I'm pretty sure sexual control was one of the big reasons there was ever gender oppression in the first place, so if we just didn't reproduce sexually there would never have been any reason for men to attempt to control women's sexuality (ensuring thier paternity) and humanity would be one big asexual happy family.

I think there will always be some sort of domination/submission going on. It's just how some people are.
Women were subjugated long before sexual reproduction was understood.

What do you mean by understood? The sex factor was still out there and produced a lot of complexes, frustrations and dramas.

I mean that there was a time when people didn't understand how a baby was conceived.
There was a time when people didn't understand what made a boy a boy and a girl a girl.

I think that humans figured that out pretty fast. Other animals do. Also, I don't think that sexual oppression came because people didn't understand how babies came out or that anyone in here was trying to say that.

It's just how some people are because.... all thier behaviour is purely a product of thier 'nature' and has nothing to do with experience or environment...OR are they 'just the way they are' thanks to thier cultural programming? Hmm...
I don't buy the notion that women were subjugated long before sexual reproduction was understood. Various cultures have varying concepts of how relevant men are to the making of babies, but the level of complexity is not a predictor of a culture realizing that sex has something to do with it. Very 'primitive' societies are just as capable as more so called 'advanced' societies to figure out that sex = baby.
There is no way for a man to know a baby is his unless he is sure that the women isn't sleeping with anyone else. In a patrilineal society, men have a prerogative for wanting to ensure the child they accept into thier line is indeed thier child and hence the development of controlling women's sexuality.

MT that wasn't what I was saying. Niam got what I was trying to say better.
There's an interesting book about this subject. This thread has got me wanting to read it.
Women's history and ancient history by Sarah Pomeroy.
Haven't read it yet but after I do I'll come back and debate this point some more.
