Across the Universe. Highly Recommended
    #7995153 - 02/08/08 08:01 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Just saw this movie for the first time 2 nights ago. I'm not a huge Beatles fan (I don't dislike them, I'm just not into them) but I liked this movie and the use of their songs very much. Especially this scene.

[Edit] New video now available

Yeah, that was an amazingly awesome movie. I love how they integrated the movie titles into the characters and dialogue. Also, I learned some stuff about the 60's that I didn't know before.

My favorite part is when they're all laying in the fields in a circle with their heads together -- some seriously good camera work. But that's a pretty sweet scene you posted, too.

Yeah man, I just saw it for the first time last night. It was so freaking awesome.
My favorite scene was when they were playing "Strawberry fields forever". I thought it was especially awesome how they showed the ocean, then it turned into the inside of the washing machine.
But the whole movie rocked.

To whomever commented on the video, I said the video was a good representation of the way colors can appear, not the whole spectrum of visuals you can see.

My mom bought this for me a couple days ago and gave it to me when I saw her today. She said she thought it was "right up my ally." I'll watch it tomorrow when I'm dosing 2c-e.

I went to go see it on acid, actually. Took 3 hits in a park and we went that night to see it.

I didn't like it very much. Then again, I was in a movie theater and I felt like all the images on the screen were controlling my eyes, but the plot that I tried to follow I thought was kinda cheesy.

But I'm not gonna prevent anyone. You may like it. The girl I was with loved it.

It was a good movie. It could be argued that it lacked depth. That scene looked MUCH more psychedelic in theaters (mind you, I was on a low mushroom dose).

My favorite was when their apartment turns into clouds and sky. :ooo:

Watch 'The Yellow Submarine' on LSD, or 'What the Bleep do We Know?' Oh, and Alice in Wonderland...

Great movies to watch whilst tripping.

What the Bleep Do We Know was just sad. Half the people on there didn't know their ass from a hole in the ground, and the director creatively distorted everything the other half said. Watching that movie felt like getting lobotomized.

well I thought the part they mentioned of quantum physics how atoms can be at two different places at once, it makes you think...

With all the people on this planet, and all the structures built on this planet and everything, it's all made of atoms and they flicker between the world we live in, and somewhere else we do not know of...so where do they go? Are there parallel universes? Makes you wonder sometimes...

Plus they just make the movie look cool...that's why I loved it. A lot of it is arbituary bullshit but some of it is worth listening to.

yeah, too bad this is a low-quality crap YouTube video.  the actual footage is pretty crazy.  especially in the beginning of the song, there are some really neat subtle effects, trails unlike traditional trails effects ive seen in other movies.  much more like real psychedelic trails than cheesy movie fx.

anyway, really cool movie, i agree.  at first i thought it was going to be cheesy, they do some typical musical-style stuff in the beginning.  but it picked up quickly.  the songs were all rendered in creative ways.  and how can you not love the Beatles?  we owe much of pop music to them.

Wow, I started watching this tonight (minus the 2c-e because I didn't get my shipment in) and I had to turn it off after about 30-45 minutes. It was super boring, the covers weren't very great, and the acting wasn't phenomenal or anything.

I might try finishing it sometime if it gets any better... but meh.

Thank you! I had the exact same experience today. WTF is with everyone worshiping that movie? A few hours later I turned it on while I was doing homework in the background, and it gets better, but still pretty boring and campy.

I mean, it was very artistic, I liked the colors, I even liked a fair number of the song renditions, but the thing just doens't hold together as a movie.

I realize that. I can take musicals.

What I'm saying is that only the song bits really worked (many, not all of them). All of the film that was spent between the musical scenes felt very poorly constructed, like the director was only interested in making the songs work, and left the connective bits to an incompetent intern.

I swear I'm not a philistine, the film just really didn't do much for me.

I still don't understand the reason for making a Jimmy Hendrix character just to remind people that he was alive in that era. Bad movie imo.

I found it absolutely horrid, without any real redeeming qualities. The plot was simply nonsensical, and the characters downright ludicrous. It was teeming with worn out cliches, unintentional non sequiturs, and absurdly shallow acting. The music was passable at best, and I guess the effects could have been worse (I might have enjoyed the acid trip scene had I not already been royally pissed at wasting $7 on it), but really, I came out of the theatre thinking "WTF, how could they have fucked up something with such potential".

I can honestly say that I enjoyed the trailer more than the movie itself.

I totally agree about the shallow script lacking any character development.. but i found the acid trip with all the pointless lights and colors just annoying.

For original sources and ideas please read the book Electric Kool Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe. That IS amazing. This film and the Beatles got the ideas from it. Even the phrases and well... pretty much the whole thing is based on that book, which is a report of a veridical story. Believe me. Read that book and this film and what the Beatles did pretty much has no taste and even seems a bit bullsh**. I love the Beatles by the way. Bono here seems like an egotistic trying-to-be-cool bastard.

I don't like musicals. It never made much sense to me why everyone kept breaking out in song. I mean, who does that anyway?

But Across The Universe is the most brilliant, well done movie I have ever seen. The beauty and balance and depth were just amazing. This movie is truly a work of art, made by people who "get it". It is the best movie I have ever seen, and that's saying a lot because I have a collection of several thousand DVDs.

If the movie didn't make sense to you, it's because you weren't receptive to its message, it's easy to see how it would clash with a strong sense of pride and ego. But that's exactly the idea... it was made by people who love psychedelics for people who love psychedelics.

Watch it on shrooms and smoke a bowl before it starts and the meaning of life will be explained in 133 minutes.

Yeah mate, respect your opinions. I only watched that bit on this forum though, God saves me from watching it all though i might do it as you said you liked it so much. But you will agree with me that when you read a good book and after watch a film which is wholly inspired on it, it tends to be a bit disappointing. One of the best books i ever read is Electric Kool Aid Acid Test. If you liked this film please read the book. And I bet you will not need any drugs to feel the trip.

I found this feel tacky and cheesy.

The acid trip scene was laughable.

Like, the entire movie having a terrible plot with shallow character development aside. ALL of the drug references seemed so forced and lame, it was like, wtf?! Why is he getting high off a non-existant joint? Yet later smoking fat ass ones, it doesnt make sense. The acid scene I admit, was nothing like acid, not even CLOSE. They royally fucked it over. I know that hollywood has the technology to do some amazing shit, they could have spent time on it and done research or anything. They just changed all the colors. Didn't make a shits worth of sense to me.

I saw it the day after i dropped acid too btw.
