How much do you think we know?

lets say that X is the amount of all the knowledge that can be known about humans.
let me back up.... lets say that remote viewing is possible (just for this brief second), I think we would eventually be able to scientifically explain how it works. There is a scientific, objective explanation for everything.... maybe we dont know it, or cant wrap our heads around it just yet... but if something is going to be a phenomena/occurence, it is.... so it therefor has mechanics to explain itself to the universe.
ok, forget remote viewing now...
back to the first part.
X = all knowledge of the mechanics of reality (or atleast human interaction with reality) what percentage of X do you think we know?
think honestly about that, and then read on.
well, we figured out why we fall. we figured out what color blindness was.... shit like that.
now, if your number was something low like 20%... like mine, then it wouldnt make much sense to start ruling certain phenomena out due to it not being objectively/scientifically observed.
Quote:
In Science the credit goes to the man who convinces the world, not to the man to whom the idea first occurred. Sir William Osler (1849-1919) Canadian physician.
Quote:
The hypotheses we accept ought to explain phenomena which we have observed. But they ought to do more than this: our hypotheses ought to foretell phenomena which have not yet been observed. William Whewell (1794-1866) English mathematician, philosopher.
Quote:
It is a popular delusion that the scientific enquirer is under an obligation not to go beyond generalisation of observed facts...but anyone who is practically acquainted with scientific work is aware that those who refuse to go beyond the facts, rarely get as far. Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-95) English biologist.
and last....

One thing I have learned in a long life: that all our science, measured against reality, is primitive and childlike and yet it is the most precious thing we have.

Agreed, and 20% is definitely generous.

"As the circle of light increases so must the circumference of darkness" not sure where I read that, but that basically sums the issue up. I would say as an equation it would come close to something like x = m * s * Sy Where m = the mind of every cognitive being in the universe (because every signifier will have a completely different mental representation) Where s = every signifier able to be perceived and Where Sy = the sum of every system used to determine and interpret said signifiers (referred to systems being for example Languages, interpretive models like different mathematics, also different schools of interpretation like economics, ecology, psychology, sociology etcetera all of which use completely different language to explain often the same signifier) Completely convoluted I know, but I think that gives a rough outline of what were looking at at least. You know, I always say - "you can't make a circle out of triangles" The idea of "completeness" is absolutely incapable with the idea of "parts". As well, objectivity leads to Fatal Reductionism, which of course is a common fallacy in science/philosophy in the post-modern era. I think though, in terms of interpretive systems (mathematics and language), were darn close to "putting it all together". In fact I think all of the pieces have already been worked out, were just waiting for the unification. I can't wait, but also am completely happy to let others do all the work;)

I think it would be accurate to assume that we will always know less than everything, but more than nothing. There is no way to know what we don't know, so it makes more sense to focus our attention on expanding our knowledge while remaining humble about the scope of our understanding.

well we can have knowledge of the material world or something like altered states. when it comes to knowledge of the material world, i think we know absolutely nothing. we are clueless as to what exists beyond our earth. all we have are concepts and pictures, that doesn't cut it for me.
when it comes to knowledge of altered states, i still think we know nothing. i think there is no limit to what we can experience, and to think there is would just be cutting ourselves off from potential.

There are no irreducibles! That is important to understand. But what we can do is pin down the way in which things relate. The way in which things relate are absolute, so I think we CAN formulate absolute relations. For instance we know 1 + 1 = 2. Now in a real sense I have no idea what that actually means without identifying the signifiers. But no matter how you look at it, no matter what you say 1 is, 1 + 1 = 2.

No, 1 + 1 = 2 because we say so. Thats all there is to it. It's all cultural. we use +,=,-,^, etc because some guy used it and everyone went with it. Math is because we say so.

Actually that is an absolute fallacy. I already said that the relation expressed is regardless of what we actually assign to each signifier. 1 + 1 = 2 No matter what language, no matter what 1 actually is, no matter what culture. Math is not because we say so, numbers are absolute in the ways in which they inter-relate. It is not open to interpretation. That is beyond dispute for anyone with even a passing familiarity.

Thats funny, and true in a sense. It bothers me that I couldn't find the gentleman's names related in the following story I did search for about 15 min in various volumes trying to track it down to no avail, but its so amusing I wanted to relate it anyway.
In the first major conference of scientists in england after Darwin's "on the origin of species", there was an exchange between to reputable scientists I have always thought hilarious. In short: One guy says to the other "Sir, is it on your fathers, or your mothers side you claim descendancy from apes?", the other man replies "I would sooner claim descendancy from apes than accept the churches dogma".

Definately not much.
Just wait till the world talks openly about aliens and the science behind remote viewing and telepathy. Then we would be 1 percent closer to knowingness.

Oy, that's not true atall sir! The more we know, the more we understand. If we understood that we are but an evolving bacteria killing it's host and failing the cosmic test of universal awareness, then we would know that we were never alone

Not sure I agree with that, though I used to feel that way too.
I've found that people often "know" things, intuitively, that they must, and that undue effort to "figure it out" using data clouds perspective. This is obviously not always true and I wouldn't trade my factual knowledge for anything, but knowing does not equal understanding. Overthought and misplaced focus destroy true understanding, and are often biproducts of knowledge.
