First grow = lot of success + drying question
    #7994331 - 02/07/08 10:53 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

My first post here, but I must say this website has been a tremendous resource in helping me achieve great success with the art/science of mushroom growing. Here's a few pics from the first flush

Yeah they grew in weird directions because of the light, but overall it's been great so far. Tested them out earlier this week (tuesday) with 24g fresh and they are very very potent. Extremely visual, either Burma or Thailand cubensis strain (I have a second grow underway which isn't fully colonized yet and I forgot which strain was which)

Main reason I'm posting is to find out if my drying method will work. I've got a metal strainer sitting inside a trash bin, its wedged nicely about halfway in there. The bottom of the bin is filled with DampRid and I've got a ceiling fan going over them. My plan is to leave the fan on overnight and then put the bin somewhere else and seal it airtight to let the DampRid finish the job. Will this work?

It hasn't been like that for long and there's a lot of moisture gathering on top of the DampRid so I'm hoping this is a decent drying method

Thanks shroomery!

I generally think you want a fan much closer than that. Like almost right on them. Also, the Damp Rid is having to absorb the moisture from your ENTIRE room not just the bucket. You could get some cheap tupperware and make a nice little setup. There was also a recent thread about a kick ass way to dry your shrooms. It involved a box fan and several furnace filters (not the plexiglass kind though). Look for it. It also involved Alton Brown.

leave out on a newspaper and or fan .
then the next day or two, stick with damp rid.

Hmm, well I was hoping the airflow from the fan would just expediate the process. I was planning on covering that container in the morning (although I could just do that now) so the Damp Rid had less air to work with.

Sorry if there was miscommunication on my part. I think faster then I type and miss steps :frown:. You probably want to leave them out, spread out like galadar said on some newspaper to evaporate most of the moisture out of them. At least to the point where they start getting bendy and shriveled. Then transfer them to your container of Damp Rid which will suck out the rest of that moisture. If you just have them straight on Damp Rid, you'll be changing that pretty often. If you only have the ceiling fan I'm sure it won't hurt anything . Also, when you put them in your container there make sure that the sieve isn't crushed down on the Damp Rid cause I hear it tastes like ass if it gets on your mushrooms.

Well the drying is irrelevant now, those mushies have all been consumed by now

But after a few days, the pins have mostly turned to aborts, and the ones that haven't aborted just aren't growing. I have a feeling the cake might be dried out, but I've heard that such a large cake shouldn't be dunked for very long. Would it hurt to dunk for a few hours and return to 12/12 lighting for fruiting? Perhaps I'm just a little impatient, it's been four days since harvest and growth has pretty much stopped, but this is normal, right?

Not bad at all, fair sized mushrooms that is for sure.

What spawn/bulk spawn was used? and congratulations on the success.

Ha!  That is the walmart "premium" strainer you have there.  I have the same one.

It was spawned on rye and then to compost (a compost bag I got off of mushbox.com, I dunno if links are allowed so my bad if they aren't). And yea I got the grow box, the trash bin, and the strainer at walmart, sue me for being cheap

I remember reading elsewhere on this site that bulk cakes like this don't need to be dunked for very long, which makes sense because this is much much looser than a cake spawned in a jar would be, and it seemed fairly soaked after an hour or two so I drained and rinsed and put it back into fruiting. Hopefully I'll have some pins in the next few days.

While I'm posting, I might as well address my other thread about my second spawn thats getting ready. I've had success with compost already as shown here, but I was thinking about doing coir/coffee for my second one. But I was told compost is a better choice overall on another drug forum, but the guy that told me that just so happens to run spores101 and mushbox, so he's a vendor that sells compost. So I'm not really sure what to think. Suggestions?
